Course Descriptions

ED 730/630 Leadership, Planning, and Organizational Behavior in Education

This course provides school leaders with preparation in skills for providing purpose and direction for individuals and groups, shaping school culture and value, facilitating the development of a shared strategic vision for the school, formulating goals and planning change efforts with staff, and setting priorities for one's school in the context of community and district priorities for student and staff needs. (3 credits)

ED 702/602 Statistics in Educational Research

Basic theory, techniques for using descriptive and inferential statistics, and application in educational research designs. (2 credits)


ED 731/631 Educational Law and Organizational Structure of Education

This course is designed as a beginning law course for school administrators. Topics to be studied include organizational structure of schools, federal and state court systems, church-state issues, teacher rights, student rights, rights of students with disabilities, instructional issues, tort liability, and equal opportunity in education. (3 credits)

ED 735/635 Personnel, Supervision, and Staff Development

This course provides school leaders with preparation in skills for instructional improvement and working with faculty and staff to identify professional needs. Classes are designed for in-depth study and practice planning, organizing, and facilitating programs that improve faculty and staff effectiveness and are consistent with institutional goals and needs; supervising individuals and groups; providing feedback on performance; arranging for remedial assistance; engaging faculty and others to plan and participate in recruitment and development activities; and initiating self-development. (4 credits)


ED 419/519 - Creating Web-Based Curriculum Materials (2 cr.)

This course will help educators design and implement a classroom web site to communicate with students and parents.  Participants will design and implement a plan for a student created web project.  Educators will learn how to create web-based classroom materials and how to utilize a classroom web site for publication of student work.


ED 422/522 - Electronic Resources:  Issues and Practice (2 cr.)

Issues and Practice will cover many areas of the electronic research process of emerging technology for K-12 teachers.  Using computer-mediated communication methods, students will submit assignments electronically (e-mail; Web Board), and will also have hands-on experience in Internet research, along with knowledge and skill building that will transfer across multiple platforms and settings.

This 2-credit course will cover copyright laws and determine when and how to use images and music downloaded from the Internet.  Participants will learn how the Internet can affect privacy and how to make their own school’s computers more “safe.”


ED 425/525 - Methods of Computer-Mediated Communication in Education (2 cr.)

This course provides an introduction to modern electronic communication tools available to incorporate into education, and experience in using them to facilitate lifelong learning.  Participants will learn to use computer-based communication to access information and enhance productivity.  Teachers will be encouraged to share professional development resources available via electronic communication with colleagues, ideas for using communication tools and evaluations of their use in education.  Ethical issues of using these tools will be explored plus the potential for learning and teaching.


ED 428/528 - Effective Use of Multimedia (2 cr.)

Multimedia is a powerful tool to create multi-sensory learning by combining video, sound, graphics, still photography, animation, and text.  Using multimedia communication tools, students can demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge in a concrete manner, and acquire the skills needed for independent learning.  Participants will identify available multimedia resources and copyright issues.  Multimedia-enhanced lessons will be created to serve as a model for the introduction of multimedia into the classroom.


ED 435/535 - Infusing Technology into the Mathematics Curriculum (2 cr.)

This course is designed to educate future and current teachers of mathematics in the integration of instructional technology to aid students in the areas of most difficulty.  This will involve reading current research on the use of technology in mathematics, evaluate commercial and freeware software, and develop mathematics lessons using information from discussion and research.  These lessons will involve students in an active and meaningful mathematical learning experience involving instructional technology.  They will also develop and publish a web page containing their integrated technology unit and links to recommended math education sites.

 

ED 439/539 - Infusing Technology into Literacy Instruction (2 cr.)

This course is designed to provide K-12 teachers opportunities to critically examine the theoretical and practical implications of infusing computer technology into their classroom literacy instruction.  The course will introduce students to a variety of computer technology tools and materials currently available to support literacy instruction and will help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to critically evaluate the benefits, potential problems, and developmental appropriateness of using the materials with various children.


ED 442/542 - Infusing Technology into the Science Curriculum (2 cr.)

Infusing Technology into the Science Curriculum will assist science teachers seeking to enhance their technology professional development.  Teachers will be guided through the wealth of science and technology resources available and extensive on-line interaction will be required.  WebCT will be used to deliver the bulk of the class content, facilitate communication and serve as a model for on-line instruction possibilities.  In addition to email, postings to electronic bulletin boards and chat rooms will be utilized as will the use of ewhiteboard and eblackboard

 

ED 633 - Technology and Information Systems (2 cr.)

This course provides a fundamental understanding of selected computer applications for educational leaders and administrators.  The focus of instruction is to have educational leaders use the computer as a decision-making and planning tool for carrying out communication functions of administration at the building/district office levels, classroom management, technology planning and instructional presentation.
