University Writing Committee Minutes

Present: SuEllen Shaw, chair; Steven Bolduc, Sheri Erickson, Jill Frederick, Jarilyn Gess,
Dawn Hammerschmidt, Michael McCord, Judy Strong, Stacy Voeller

Absent: Carol Sibley

Minutes: Frederick moved. McCord seconded to approve the minutes of September 7, 2007. The motion was approved unanimously.

Review of Course Proposals:

SPAN 301: Spanish Grammar and Composition I: Benjamin Smith was present to answer questions. Hammerschmidt moved. Gess seconded to approve SPAN 301 as Writing-Intensive.

  • The course does not meet the minimum of 16 pages (4800-5000 words) of formal, polished writing in multiple assignments.

  • It is unclear on the syllabus that informal writing-to-learn assignments or activities are included in the course.

Smith agreed to revise the course syllabus accordingly. The motion was approved unanimously contingent on the above being items addressed.

SPAN 302: Spanish Grammar and Composition II: Benjamin Smith was present to answer questions. Bolduc moved. Frederick seconded to approve SPAN 302 as Writing-Intensive.

  • The course does not meet the minimum of 16 pages (4800-5000 words) of formal, polished writing in multiple assignments.

  • Correct the inconsistencies between the number of essay assignments on the English and Spanish versions of the syllabus.

Smith agreed to revise the course syllabus accordingly. The motion was approved unanimously contingent on the above being items addressed.

SPAN 401: Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition: Benjamin Smith was present to answer questions. Hammerschmidt moved. Frederick seconded go approve SPAN 401 as Writing-Intensive.

  • The course does not meet the minimum of 16 pages (4800-5000 words) of formal, polished writing in multiple assignments.

  • The course does not include informal writing-to-learn assignments or activities.

Smith agreed to revise the course syllabus accordingly. The motion was approved unanimously contingent on the above being items addressed.

ANTH 445: Seminar: Bolduc moved. Erickson seconded to approve ANTH 445 as Writing-Intensive.

  • It is unclear on the syllabus that informal writing-to-learn assignments or activities are included in the course.

The motion was approved unanimously contingent on the above being item addressed.

Coding Course Sections as Writing-Intensive: Strong reported that she had not received an answer from the Registrar as to whether sections of a course could be designated Writing-Intensive and other sections not in the online schedule and Bulletin. She agreed to follow-up and report at the next UWC meeting.

Open Forum/Workshop on Navigating the Writing-Intensive Process: Shaw reported that Lee Vigilant agreed to serve as a panelist. The committee suggested other potential panel participants and Shaw agreed to contact them. Friday, October 26, 2007, was discussed as one possible date with the workshop being held at both 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. It was suggested that either Tuesday or Thursday sessions be added as well. It was further suggested that Shaw make a short presentation at the next Chairpersons meeting. Strong agreed to pursue that possibility.
