University Writing Committee Minutes
September 26, 2008
2:00 p.m.
Comstock Memorial Union 218
Present: SuEllen Shaw, chair; Steven Bolduc, Sheri Erickson, Jill Frederick, Jarilyn Gess, Dawn Hammerschmidt, Michael McCord, Jean Sando, Carol Sibley, Stacy Voeller
Minutes: Voeller moved. Bolduc seconded to approve the minutes of September 12, 2008. The motion was approved unanimously.
Announcements:
- Shaw reminded members of the Writing Matters workshops on September 29 - 3:30 pm in CMU 216 and September 30 - noon in CMU 214 and encouraged members to attend one or both sessions.
- Shaw sent an email to chairpersons whose department programs have not yet declared their Upper-Level Writing Requirement WI course. The sunset date for the current Upper-Level Writing Requirement is Fall 2009. She noted that approximately 30 degrees do not have a course specified yet.
Old Business:
- Policy Review/Changes: Shaw announced she is holding the rewording of the WI Definition and Guidelines as there are other policy changes under discussion and it would be more efficient to send a package of changes to APAC then as separate items.
- Discussion continue on the committee charge. It was noted that a Committee on Committees is being charged to review the University committee structure and committee charges this year.
- Substitutions to the Writing-Intensive graduation requirement by departments/programs that do not have an Upper-Level Writing Requirement for students graduating this year were discussed. Shaw and Sando agreed to draft a policy statement for review and recommendation by the UWC. An electronic vote will be taken so the recommendation can be placed on the agenda for the October 21, 2008, APAC meeting along with the WI Definition and Guidelines changes.
- Assessment of WI Courses: A subgroup consisting of Shaw, Sando, McCord, and Voeller will meet to draft an assessment plan for committee review and discussion.
- Re-evaluation of Current WI Courses: It was agreed that review of WI courses that are also Dragon Core courses should be done simultaneously, therefore a subgroup of the two committees should meet to work out details for the procedure.
Review of Course Proposals:
