University Writing Committee Minutes

October 5, 2007

Present: SuEllen Shaw, chair; Sheri Erickson, Jill Frederick, Jarilyn Gess, Michael McCord, Stacy Voeller

Absent: Steven Bolduc*, Carol Sibley*, Dawn Hammerschmidt*, Judy Strong
*Reviewed the proposal and sent written comments.

Minutes: Frederick moved. Gess seconded to approve the minutes of September 21, 2007. The motion was approved unanimously.

Review of Course Proposals:

ANTH 327: Aztecs: Erickson moved. Frederick seconded to approve ANTH 327 as Writing-Intensive. The motion was approved unanimously.

Coding Course Sections as Writing-Intensive: Shaw reported she had spoken with Registrar Jayne Washburn and Associate Registrar Ginny Bair regarding adding a W to the course number so a course could offer sections as Writing-Intensive or not Writing-Intensive
(ANTH 327W and ANTH 327). Washburn and Bair agreed to explore options in the database system so this could be accomplished.

Navigating the Writing-Intensive Process: Shaw reported that a Brown Bag open discussion has been scheduled for Friday, October 26, 2007, at 12:30-1:30 p.m. Lee Vigilant (Sociology) and Terry Dobmeier (Nursing) have agreed to join members of the University Writing Committee as panelists. The format and topics to address were determined. It was agreed to provide handouts as well as media projection of the materials.

New Business

Group Writing Assignments: The use of group writing assignments to fulfill the minimum of 16 pages (4800-5000 words) of formal, polished writing in multiple assignments that span the semester was discussed. It was agreed to continue discussion at a future meeting.

Turnitin.com: It was requested that discontinuation of MSUMs Turnitin license be on placed on the agenda of the next meeting.
