University Writing Committee Minutes

October 10, 2008

Present: Steven Bolduc, Sheri Erickson, Jarilyn Gess, Dawn Hammerschmidt, Michael McCord, Carol Sibley, Stacy Voeller

Absent: SuEllen Shaw, chair; (sent comments and votes on course proposals), Jill Frederick, Jean Sando

Minutes: Bolduc moved. Gess seconded to approve the minutes of September 26, 2008. The motion was approved unanimously.

Review of Course Proposals:

NURS 475L: Nursing Preceptorship: Jane Bergland was present to answer questions and provided a brief over of the course. Erickson moved. Gess seconded to approve NURS 475L as Writing-Intensive. The motion was approved unanimously.

BIOL 341: Genetics: Michelle Malott was present to answer questions and provided a brief overview of the course. Voeller moved. Hammerschmidt seconded to approve BIOL 341 as Writing-Intensive. It was suggested to clarify for students which assignments are formal or informal on the syllabus.

  • The proposal states that five Written Communications competencies will be addressed in the course, but the syllabus only lists four.
  • Indicate the number of pages of formal, polished writing per assignment on the syllabus.

Malott agreed to revise the course syllabus to reflect the above changes. The motion was approved unanimously.

BIOL 372: Aquatic Biology: Brian Wisenden was present to answer questions and provided a brief overview of the course. Erickson moved. Gess seconded to approve BIOL 372 as Writing-Intensive. It was suggested to clarify for students which assignments are formal or informal on the syllabus. The motion was approved unanimously.

BIOL 406: DNA as Destiny: Genetics and Society: Malott was present to answer questions and provided a brief overview of the course. Hammerschmidt moved. Sibley seconded to approve BIOL406 as Writing-Intensive. The motion was approved unanimously.

BIOL 478: Research Design: Wisenden was present to answer questions and provided a brief overview of the course. Gess moved. Bolduc seconded to approve BIOL 478 as Writing-Intensive. The motion was approved unanimously.
