University Writing Committee Minutes

December 8, 2006

Present: SuEllen Shaw, chair; Steven Bolduc, Jarilyn Gess, Dawn Hammerschmidt,
Michael McCord, Judy Strong

Absent: Sheri Erickson, Jill Frederick, Carol Sibley, Stacy Voeller (Erickson, Frederick and Sibley reviewed the proposals and sent comments).

Minutes: Bolduc moved. Gess seconded to approve the minutes of December 1, 2006. The motion was approved unanimously.

Review of Course Proposals:

SOC 352: Qualitative Research Methods: Lee Vigilant was present to answer questions. McCord moved. Gess seconded to approve SOC 352 as Writing-Intensive.

  • Add an assignment where drafting and revision is required for at least one paper.
  • Suggest the last paragraph of the course description on the proposal form be included on the syllabus.

Vigilant agreed to revise the course syllabus to reflect the above changes. The motion was approved unanimously.

CHEM 304: The Environment and You: Richard Lahti was present to answer questions. Bolduc moved. Gess seconded to approve CHEM 304 as Writing-Intensive.

  • A disconnect between the Written Communication competencies checked on the proposal form and those that appear on the syllabus exists.
  • The grading rubric should be added to the syllabus.

Lahti agreed to revise the course syllabus to reflect the above changes. The motion was approved unanimously.

PHIL 311: Morals and Medicine, PHIL 312: Business Ethics, PHIL 318: Professional Ethics, PHIL 320: Philosophy of the Arts: Ted Gracyk was present to answer questions. Gess moved. Strong seconded to approve PHIL 311, PHIL 312, PHIL 318, and PHIL 320 as Writing-Intensive.

PHIL 311: Morals and Medicine

  • The proposal needs to be transferred to the most recent version of the Writing-Intensive form.
  • Clarify the number of pages of polished writing in the various assignments.

PHIL 312: Business Ethics

  • The proposal needs to be transferred to the most recent version of the Writing-Intensive form.
  • Clarify the number of pages of polished writing in the various assignments.

PHIL 318: Professional Ethics
 
  • The proposal needs to be transferred to the most recent version of the Writing-Intensive form.
  • Clarify the number of pages of polished writing in the various assignments.

PHIL 320: Philosophy of the Arts:

  • The proposal needs to be transferred to the most recent version of the Writing-Intensive form.

Gracyk agreed to revise the course syllabi as noted above and to transfer the proposals to the correct Writing-Intensive form. The motion was approved unanimously.

ECON 305: The Economics of Poverty, Discrimination, and Inequality: Bolduc was present to answer questions. Strong moved. Hammerschmidt seconded to approve ECON 305 as Writing-Intensive. The motion was approved unanimously. Bolduc granted permission to post the proposal as a sample W-I course.

MDS 215: Interpersonal Communication: Gess was present to answer questions. Strong moved. Hammerschmidt seconded to approve MDS 215 as Writing-Intensive.

  • Suggest the course description on the proposal form be included on the syllabus.

Gess agreed to revise the course syllabus to reflect the above change. The motion was approved unanimously.
