Re: First Annual Student Academic Conference: Bridging the Disciplines

Early this fall, one of Moorhead State University's graduate students, Ryan Sylvester, and Dr. Andrew Conteh assembled a group of faculty, students and administrators who were interested in working on a student academic conference. Planning has progressed, and I am very pleased to let you know that the First Annual Student Academic Conference: Bridging the Disciplines, will be held on the Moorhead State University campus during the afternoon and early evening of April 14. As you will see as you read the information on the attached two pages, the Conference will showcase the accomplishments of MSU students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the various disciplines we offer. All sessions will be held in the Comstock Memorial Union. While plans have not yet been finalized, it is tentatively scheduled to last 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It will begin with a faculty keynote address, followed by a panel of student responders, focusing on the value of academic work of all forms (research, special projects, creative efforts, and so on) in the ongoing life of an educated person. Attendees will then choose among three concurrent presentations during each of twelve time periods.

As you think about and prepare for your courses for spring semester, please consider the opportunities this Conference presents. If you normally incorporate student research, expectations for creative work, service learning, or professional or career-based special projects, sessions at this upcoming Conference could be used to expand the normal classroom presentation format you already employ. While classes will not be cancelled during the scheduled Conference hours, please think seriously about the value of incorporating Conference sessions into your regular course syllabi. One result many of us have observed with regard to the new Deans' Lecture Series is how unaware persons not in the same department as the Distinguished Faculty Lecturers are about the very significant work being done by colleagues at MSU. This will almost certainly be equally true with regard to the accomplishments of MSU students.

As plans are finalized and the Conference date nears, Mr. Sylvester will be providing additional information. If you have questions, I encourage you to contact him directly. You will find his telephone number, e-mail address, and the Student Academic Conference web site location on the bottom of the call-for-papers form attached to this memorandum.

Thank you.
