Frequently Asked
Questions

As questions are
received via email, we'll post responses here so that everyone can
benefit.
|
Is
one allowed to present multiple times? |
|
Multiple
presentations are allowed, if there is sufficient space during the
conference. An application should be filed for each presentation. |
| How
long can a presentation be? |
| The
maximum presentation length is 20 minutes for an individual. Groups
will be taken into special consideration. |
| Why
is this conference taking place? |
| Essentially,
the Student Academic Conference is a celebration of student
achievement. As a liberal arts institution we should have a better
understanding of what those who are pursuing studies other than our
own are doing. We have a tendency as we progress towards graduation to
become very narrow in our focus. This conference in accordance with
the conference theme intends to bridge the disciplines so that an art
or graphic design student can present a project and the work that goes
into into it and the business student observing the presentation will
have a better appreciation of what is needed when requesting such
services in the future. That is only one example of how the exchange
of knowledge between the disciplines is beneficial to students. |
| Where
can I get more information on the conference? |
| This
website is a good place to start -- beyond that, the easiest way is to
ask one of the conference coordinators: Dr. Andrew Conteh, Ryan
Sylvester, Mike Welken, or Jeremy Nelson. We check our email every day
-- acconf@mnstate.edu. Also,
you can send snail mail to box 500. |
| Who
can participate? |
| Any
MSU Student can either present or simply attend the conference to
observe the students that do present. All members of the MSU community
are invited to attend the conference to see what our students are
doing. |
| How
do I sign up to present at the conference? |
| Complete
the conference application and
submit it along with your abstract. You can find applications
on the Student Academic Conference website, at your department office,
and from faculty. Applications are hanging at the bottom of the red
conference posters at or near your academic department. |
| I
want to present, but I don't know what to present? |
| Talk
to your professor, your advisor, or visit the ideas
page to explore some options. Please note that the ideas page is not
an exhaustive list. There are many other possibilities of what you can
present that have not been listed on that page. |
| How
much time will I have to present? |
| At
this time it is very difficult to say. The conference planning
committee hopes to be very flexible, but we will not know for sure
until all applications have been received by the deadline of Friday,
February 19, 1999. You can estimate about 15-22 minutes for your
presentation and keep an eye on the tentative conference schedule
(coming soon online). If you have a particular request please indicate
that on your application. |
| Are
poster sessions allowed to be presented at the conference? |
| Yes.
This conference is very flexible to meet the needs of the presenters
and the various types of presentations |
| Can
I present something that I worked on fall semester or last year? |
| As
long as the work is still relevant and worthwhile to share with other
students it is welcome at the Student Academic Conference. Keep in
mind the purpose of the conference is to share and defend knowledge
gained through your own work to other students and faculty. |
| Aren't
conferences such as this limited to strictly students of certain
majors? |
| This
conference is very unique from other conferences in that it is not
narrowly focused. Some students attend conferences within their
departments such as the Psychology Conference, Advertising Federation
Conference, the Model United Nations conference, and others that are
aimed at a very specific discipline. The Student Academic Conference
is for ALL students at MSU to present to other students without
restriction based on discipline or type of work. |
