This school district program assists students who speak limited English and who are new to the area or to the country. It is not necessary to speak a foreign language to volunteer with this program. We are always looking for interns or those who are willing to help with the activities and come in and entertain the residents. This is an influential program in Moorhead that focuses on youth development and building fundamental assets in youth. They currently provide after-school programs to children. A person can volunteer to be a facilitator at one of these sites or participate in other special projects or events.  Also, there is an opportunity to be involved with the Mentor Link and Linking Up programs. Through these programs college students are trained as mentors to junior high students.

This facility contains juveniles that have committed misdemeanors and/or felonies in the West Central Minnesota area. It is also used as a holding facility for juveniles who have been arrested and are being released to their parents/guardians.  Students are needed to help in the Regional Juvenile Center, helping in the outpatient program with 12-18 year-old youths awaiting sentencing.  Volunteers will sit with the kids, help monitor them, and keep them busy.

People Escaping Poverty Project (PEPP's) focus is in Grassroots Communtiy Organzing for social change. "Our mission is to strategically challenge the power dynamics of systems and institutions, by organizing powerful people and resources through intentional relationships." We train leaders to work together in addressing issues that affect their lives ie; involved over 50 students in addressing the parking issue on campus, Second Chance Opportunites, building a member led grassroots movment to increase housing and employment opportunities for people coming out of prisons and jails, Voter Education and Get out the Vote efforts, increasing voter participation among Latinos, Blacks, Native Americans, students and people in poverty.

Female volunteers assist the young moms to be with Dr. appointments, crafts and just being a friend (hanging out together, it is important to be a positive role model and good listener. Volunteer Duties: Be an advocate and provide support for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. This requires 48 hours of training. Program volunteers assist with clerical, fundraising, and special events. Court watch volunteers observe and document cases that deal with domestic abuse or assault.  Volunteers are also needed for public speaking to schools and agencies about the issues of personal violence and the services the center provides.   They would also be able to carry a beeper and handle domestic violence and sexual assault crisis calls.  Suggested Majors:  Social Work, Paralegal, Psychology, Nursing, Medical, Mass Communications.

The Red River Women's Clinic is the only abortion provider in North Dakota.  We serve women from ND, SD and MN.  We strive to offer an emotionally supportive and non-judmental environment for out patients and their support persons.  Red River Women's Clinic is a great place to put your political beliefs into direct community action.

Volunteers can become patient escorts, or volunteer in the clinic office doing various tasks like filing, making charts and packets, and generally helping clinic staff in the day to day operations of the clinic.

The regional Science Center is an outreach program of the university that provides programs to over 20,000 people each year.  The Center provides programs in natural history and observation al astronomy at its two sites; the 300 acre Buffalo River Site located off high way ten 15 miles east of Moorhead, MN.  The site has a 13,000 interpretive center and telescope observatory built in 1992. The second site is the MSUM Planetarium located in Bridges Hall on the MSUM campus.  The following volunteer opportunities are for the natural history program located at the Buffalo River Site

1.  Teacher assistant program:  To assist Moorhead 3rd grade teachers in our Prairie Project at our Buffalo River Site.  Part of this program involves working in Moorhead 3rd grade classrooms assisting students in planting and growing prairie forbes to be later replanted at the Buffalo River Site.

2. Participate in our Bird Monitoring Station.  Our station is part of a North American bird banding project.  Learn how to capture, band and measure characteristics of local song birds.

3.  Participate in our FeederWatch program that is part of a U.S. and Canada study of birds that visit bird feeders.

This is a Hispanic ministry where volunteers can help teach English to Spanish speaking adults for the citizenship test. There is a need for child care during Sunday liturgy's (all Spanish mass) and serving coffee. They would also like a guitar player to teach young adults how to play. Opportunities also available in forming Hispanic Boy Scout troops and also fundraising.  Volunteers will never do just one thing, but various tasks.

This big brother/big sister program is a one-year commitment. Volunteers are matched with a child that has similar interests.
