Biosciences Student Success

MSUM Biosciences students have a strong record of winning the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.  Since 2001, six MSUM students have won the award, a $7,500 scholarship.  Four of these students were involved in the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Emphasis.  The scholarship program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.  Approximately 300 students nation wide are recognized with the award each year.

In 2003, Justin Voog, a Biochemistry and Biotechnology student received both an $8,000 Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship, one of 52 awarded in the nation as well as a Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Scholarship from the National Institutes of Health.  Justin’s MSTP scholarship is providing $300,000 for him to complete a combined M.D. / Ph.D. program at the University of California San Diego.
