Research and Communications II

Instructors: Drs. Chastain, Marry, Melchior, and Provost. 

This course consists of both laboratory research and significant training on scientific communication and is the second in a sequence for seniors in the biochemistry and biotechnology major. Students will continue to work on their research projects that were initiated in Biotechniques: Research and Communication I. Students will make oral presentations critically evaluating scientific literature, and finally prepare a poster to present the data from their research project.

If you aren't presenting on a day, you still have a role to play as an audience member.  Please read the instructions below BEFORE coming to class.

Seminar Selection:  Each faculty mentor will work with their group to select one publication (not a review) for each student to present.  Presentation dates will be selected on the first day of class.

Research will be conducted on the days when only one or two presentations are given. 

Seminar Requirement for Presenter:
•    Your seminar should last approximately 40 minutes (definitely no less than 30 minutes)
•    Following your seminar you should briefly present your assessment of the paper.
•    Then their will be a question and answer session.

  • Students will ask questions first.  Each student is required to ask at least one meaningful question.
  • Faculty with ask questions following the students.
Each student's paper is linked to their name.  Read the paper Prior to class.

April 19-  Abstract Submission - Review abstract with your advisor.  Students will submit thier own abstracts.  Be certain to include both departments in your title as well as your research mentor's name.

Journal Club Requirements for Students NOT Presenting:
•  
  Read each paper prior to coming to seminar.
•    Write a minimum of 2 questions about each paper:
One question about methods
One question about results/ discussion

Submit your questions via D2L and bring with you to class.
  • You will keep one copy to ask the question during the discussion period
Journal Club Make-Up  (only with prior approval)

Poster Presentations: May During Finals.
10 min presentations of the whole poster and any updated information from the Academic Conf

You will simply give a 10 min poster presentation with 5 min for questions on the background, methods, results or conclusions by the faculty.  Bring your poster to the biochem lab for your pesentations
