Guidelines for Mentors
This program is designed to provide selected students the opportunity to engage in intentional relationship building with a paired mentor with the goal of providing one-on-one guidance and support for these students. The mentors will provide expertise to the students in interested professional fields that would help them advance in their career exploration, and enhance their educational goals.
The students look to mentors for guidance and support and benefit greatly from their expertise. Mentors can help student achieve their program goals by answering questions, providing networking connections, and giving feedback on job search skills. They also serve as a resource for growth and help to shape the future alumnus of MSU Moorhead.
Why become a mentor?
- To give back to MSU Moorhead
- Meet future leaders with fresh insight and ideas
- Reinforce your understanding and experience in the field by teaching and sharing knowledge about your career
- Gain great satisfaction in helping shape the future of a young professional
You could make all the difference to a student at MSUM!
Expectations and Time Commitment
Students who are selected to participate in this program will expect to work with a mentor who can commit to regular contact with them (at least one 30 minute interaction per month) from late January until mid-April. This relates to the semester long pilot program scheduled to start spring 2011.
There is no expectation that an internship or employment opportunity will result from the relationship. Mentors can expect to work with MSUM students that are committed to participating in this program and have a strong desire to learn.
We make every attempt to match student’s major and interests with mentor’s area of expertise whenever possible. We would like the mentors to have at least two years of experience working in their listed area of expertise.
