  4. Lock the incoming lobby doors and turn off the automatic door opener using the small gold key on the closing key paddle (leather).  Keep the closing keys out to be used by Security to lock the library.

At ten minutes before closing

  1. Sound the closing bell two (2) times using evenly spaced pushes.

At five minutes before closing

  1. Sound the closing bell once (1).

  3. Bring the elevator to first floor.  Push toggle switch up to ON position and leave elevator door open.

  4. Turn off the circulation/reserve computers.

  5. Place money from the cash register in the drawer and lock.

  6. Return to desk and wait for Campus Security person to finish closing procedures.  Exit the building with Campus Security.  Security will lock the doors and put the closing keys in the inside book drop.

Activities performed by Security personnel:

At approximately fifteen (15) minutes before closing, enter the library by means of the northern-most brown exit door (the other doors should already be locked).

Library personnel will already have begun the closing procedure by sounding the closing bells and turning off some building lights.  You must tour the building and lock the doors.

1. Tour the building:

  1. The prime objective is to clear the building of people.  Wake any dozing patrons who might otherwise be left locked in the building and inform them the library is closing.  Familiarity with secluded study areas is necessary.  **Note that in LI 222 -- LIT Center, patrons may not always hear the closing bells. Make an extra effort to notify these patrons as you begin your tour of the building.

  2. Announce to anyone still in the building that the library is closing and they must leave.

  3. Check the study carrels, stairwells, group study rooms, and restrooms to be sure they are empty.  Doors of the group study rooms are to be left open.  The lights should be turned off.

  4. In your tour, turn off all lights controlled by local wall switches. (restrooms, group study rooms, and LI 222 – LIT Center, for example).

  5. Check the Staff Lounge door (LI 220) and the Library Classroom (LI 208) to be sure the doors are locked.

  6.  Turn the lights off and lock the photocopy rooms on 2nd and 1st floor (LI 130; LI 215).

2.   Return to the Circulation Desk and turn off the 1/3 light switch at Circulation.

3.   Take the closing keys from the Circulation Desk.

4.   Turn off any remaining local light switches (e.g. hallway and reserve area) but leave the lobby lights on.

5.   Be sure all persons are out of the building.  Have the circulation students and librarian on duty (if there is one) exit the building.  The Security person should be the last to leave.

6.  Use the closing keys to lock the exit door and check all four brown doors to be sure they are locked.  Drop the closing keys in one of the inside book returns.

7.  With 16L-2 key, release the latches on the four reading lounge (porch) doors, push shut and lock.

 8.  Lock the two revolving doors (2 locks each).  With the hex key, release the latches on the doors on either side of the revolving doors, push shut and lock.

 9.  The outside doors should lock automatically.

Emergency Closing Procedures for Library Student Workers

In the event Campus Security has not arrived at the library by 5 minutes before the scheduled closing time:

  1. Lock the copy rooms and turn off the lights in the LI 222 -- LIT Center.  Remain at the Circulation Desk until most of the patrons have left the building.  Do not tour the building.

  2. When satisfied that most people are out of the building (i.e. the first floor is empty), call Campus Security and inform them that you have locked the library doors and that you're leaving the building.  Ask them to please come over to tour and secure the building.

  3. Exit the library and use the closing keys to lock the exit door.  Check all four brown doors to be sure they are locked.  Drop the closing keys in one of the inside book returns.
