Wanda Gág (1893-1946), the oldest of seven children, grew up in New Ulm, Minnesota.She attended the St. Paul Institute of Art and the Minneapolis School of Art and received a scholarship to attend the Art Students League in New York City.In the field of children’s literature, Wanda Gág is best known for Millions of Cats, which is considered the first American picture book.Millions of Cats has remained in print since its publication in 1928. Six of her other picture books, The ABC Bunny, The Funny Thing, Gone Is Gone, Nothing at All, Snippy and Snappy, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are now available from the University of Minnesota Press.In 1977, she received the Kerlan Award posthumously for her entire body of work. "Wanda Gág: A Minnesota Childhood," a biography of Wanda Gág in DVD format which includes photographs from historical societies and illustrations from Gág's published works, is available through Oxcart Publications. |

the year to read aloud to younger children.
