  Brian has four degrees in higher education with three being in psychology.He obtained his undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University, in English and psychology.Brian was awarded a Masters of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in English as a second language from the birthplace of the United States Peace Corps, World Learning Institute’s School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont.Finally, Brian was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Washington State University’s College of Education with a cognate in counseling psychology.
 
Brian’s work experience spans professional positions in five different countries of vastly different cultures, languages, and religions.He taught high school English for two years in Prescott AZ.Then Brian moved on to teach English for three years in Botswana, Africa in a remote village that did not have the convenience of running water or electricity.As an intern in the Master’s program, he taught English for a semester at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez that coincided with the world surfing championships that same semester.Upon graduation from the School for International Training, Brian accepted a position in a language institute in the predominantly Muslim city of Jakarta, Indonesia, working with mid-career bankers wishing to attend an American university’s Master’s of Business Administration.Brian then repatriated state side for half a year teaching at Guilford College’s Interlink Language Center, with students from many different countries in the same classroom, and arranging many extra-curricular trips, cultural experiences, and educational field studies.Brian then taught at the College of Micronesia in the Federated States of Micronesia’s state of Chuuk, which happens to be the number one shipwreck scuba diving site in the world.Brian then started up the first international student program at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington.Subsequent to that position, Brian entered Washington State University as a graduate teaching assistant, charged with preparing teachers for assessment, test interpretation, and fair grading practices.He then taught at Minnesota State University Moorhead for nine years in educational psychology, with a one year leave taken at Minnesota State University Mankato.
 
Brian’s life experiences have been extremely varied and extreme as well.He has successfully solo sky-dived on a static line.B

rian worked his way through undergraduate school as a forest fire-fighter known as a “Hotshot” for two years.While in Botswana, Brian was fortunate enough to have coached a track national champion 400-meter female student, hunted leopard, impala, and khudu on the headmaster’s farm.He attained master scuba diver status in Chuuk with more than 110 dives on WWII Japanese shipwrecks in the island state’s lagoon.While repatriated, Brian has participated in many road races both running and cycling.He is currently learning the art of humility from the games of golf and racquetball.Finally, Brian has been profoundly blessed with a beautiful, brilliant wife of 20 years who is faculty at MSUM as well.

  Lisa Karch joined the CNSA faculty in the fall of 2010.  She received her Ph.D. from North Dakota State University in Human Development with an emphasis in Counselor Education, her master's from North Dakota State University in School Counseling, and her bachelor's from Concordia College in Moorhead.

After Lisa received her bachelor’s degree she worked in Residential Life at Concordia College as a hall director for three years.  Then she worked as a 7-12 grade licensed school counselor at Lake Park-Audubon High School for a couple years.  For the past six years, Lisa has worked in the Moorhead Public School District as a licensed school counselor at S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School.  Her teaching interests include school counseling, counseling theory, counseling skills, group counseling and internship.

Lisa's research interests include the need for school counselors in Minnesota, the needs of rural school counseling, growing concern of mental health needs among school-age children, and technology in counseling.  Lisa is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, American School Counseling Association, North Dakota Counseling Association, Minnesota School Counseling Association and the West Central School Counseling Association in Minnesota.

When not working, Lisa enjoys running, biking, camping, spending time at the lake, traveling, and spending time with her new little baby girl, Josephine and husband Jason.
