Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. That is, the students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. Like Pell Grants, SEOGs do not have to be paid back.
The U.S. Department of Education guarantees that each participating school will receive enough money to pay the Federal Pell Grants of its eligible students. There is no guarantee every eligible student will receive a SEOG; students at each school are paid based on the availability of funds. The maximum award for the 2009-2010 academic year is $800.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is your avenue by which to apply for the SEOG. The key to receiving these grants is APPLY EARLY! Because of the limited nature of these funds, be sure to apply by the priority date.
