Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." - Chinese Proverb

Why a picture of me and a fish?

Well, I love fishing and I love teaching. Fishing can provide great metaphorical material for teaching.

  1. Fish travel in schools.
  2. Sometimes I need to try a number of various presentations before I actually get a fish's attention.
  3. And then, I may need to be even more creative to keep their attention.
  4. Some fish react to some presentations and others don't.
  5. I try to learn as much as I can to become better at fishing.
  6. Much can be learned by observing fish and other fisherman.

Do you see any similarities between fishing and teaching?

This site is dedicated to learning and how we learn.

I am the Director of the Mathematics Learning Center at Minnesota State University of Moorhead but this isn't information just for mathematics instructors. It's for anyone who is interestested in learning and the process of learning. Hopefully it will pique your interest enough that you will begin your own learning journey.
