PHIL 215: Group Project Assignment

Goal of group project: This is a MORAL ISSUE ADVOCACY PROJECT. You must create an educational display or literature, or engage in some public activity through which you advocate a moral position on a controversial moral issue for which there has been an assigned reading in PHIL 215 this semester.

DEADLINE: Your project must be completed no later than the start of class on Dec. 1.

Here are some examples. You could advocate that Minnesota should reinstate the death penalty. Or you could advocate that the commercial production and sale of alcohol should be banned. Or that the drinking age should be lowered to 18. Or you could advocate that the state of Minnesota should require more fuel-efficiency in vehicles owned by Minnesotans. Or that homosexual relationships should receive no legal recognition.

Three course days are set aside for working on your project. The first will be Oct. 22. I expect you to use the Oct. 22 to accomplish three things:
1. Select a topic.
2. Select a method of public advocacy.
3. Assign work to group members to accomplish by Dec. 1, when you will make a classroom presentation. (Remember, you will have class time to meet as a group on two more occasions before Thanksgiving break)

Your advocacy must be aimed at the general public (at people NOT enrolled in this course), and must involve education of the public on your topic. For example, you could create and distribute leaflets on a topic, or send letters to regional newspapers, or set up a table with a poster display in the student union during the lunch hour. Or do something else!

Each project will be graded on three things:
• Clarity and accuracy of the educational materials that you create. You succeed in making the MORAL ISSUE clear.
• Evidence that you actually brought your advocacy to the attention of people who are not enrolled in our course
• A brief presentation of your project to the rest of the class. (You must choose a group spokesperson who will explain the project to the class, followed by a question-and-answer session.)

In addition, each group will have a sign-up sheet for demonstrating attendance at the three scheduled meetings. Students who did not participate in the project during the scheduled class meetings will receive a reduced grade for the project. (In other words, free riders are penalized.)
