What is it?
Abstinence can mean different things to different people. For some it might mean refraining from vaginal, oral or anal intercourse. For others, abstinence might mean not having any intimate contact such as fondling, kissing or masturbation. For our purposes, abstinence means not having any penile/vaginal intercourse.

How effective is it?

Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy when used and used correctly

What are the advantages?

Abstinence is free
It may encourage people to build relationships in other ways
No hormonal or medical side effects

What are the disadvantages?

It may be very frustrating to both partners.
If you are trying to be abstinent and change your mind in the heat of the moment, you may not have any other type of birth control available.
Often people end abstinence unprepared to protect themselves against pregnancy or infection.
