A diaphragm is only available by prescription.
A fitting ring is inserted into the vagina and the largest ring that feels comfortable is usually the one that is prescribed.
There are different types of diaphragms; flat, coil or arcing spring. You and your provider can decide what is best for you.
Diaphragms
with spermicide can be inserted up to 2 hours before intercourse. If
more than 2 hours go by before intercourse takes place you will need to
insert more spermicide. (Spermicides are only effective for 2 hours).
To insert more spermicide you can leave your diaphragm in place and add
more spermicde directly into the vagina.
Diaphragms need to be left in place for 6-8 hours after intercourse.
After using a diaphragm, wash it with a mild soap and warm water.
To check your diaphragm for holes or cracks hold it up to a light or fill it with water.
It
is recommended that a medical provider check to make sure the fit is
correct every few years. If you have gained or lost more than 10 pounds
of weight, given birth or have vaginal surgery need to see a medical
provider as you may need a different size diaphragm.
