MSUM Discovering Paris Study Tour

March 13 - March 21, 2009

Syllabus: 

For one credit students will attend preparatory meetings, watch and discuss the videos, keep a journal during their preparation and their stay, and prepare a portfolio containing photos, artifacts and memorabilia, to be submitted for grading before the end of Spring semester.Students will also produce an evaluation of their experience.

For a second credit the student will, in addition to the one credit assignment and in consultation with the professor, develop a focused and circumscribed project to be worked on during their stay in Paris related to personal interests, background, future career, academic major, etc.  Possible sites to be incorporated into the project include the Cinémathèque, the Musée de l'Homme, the European Union Center, Institut du Monde Arabe, Centre Européen de la Photographie, Musée de l'Histoire Naturelle, Cité de la Musique, etc. The project will be a 10 page paper or an equivalent Power Point, video, portfolio, etc, to be submitted before the end of Spring semester.

Credits will be awarded as French 290 - Independent Study in French.  Grading will be Pass/Fail.

Application:  Applications are available in the Office of International Programs, Flora Frick 153.  The initial application deadline is November 2nd  Applications will be accepted until  December 7th but priority will be given to students who meet the initial deadline.  Please note on your application form whether or not you intend to take the tour for credit, and if so, how many (1 or 2). 

Pre-Departure Meetings / Sessions: November 13, January 15, February 12, March 5

All meetings will be held in CMU 204 at 4:00pm.


Accommodations:  The group will stay in a comfortable Left Bank hotel, close to the Louvre, Notre Dame, and the Latin Quarter.

Faculty:  Dr. Jim Kaplan grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts and received his Ph.D. in French from the University of California Berkeley.  Through many years of work as a camp counselor for the YMCA in Sweden he became interested in Swedish culture and language, and was founder of the Swedish Cultural Heritage Society of the Red River Valley, of which he served as President for several years. He does research, lecturing and publishing on topics in Swedish American Art.  He has also done considerable research and publishing in the field of French 18th century literature. Before starting his teaching career at UCLA, he worked for several years as a U.S. Department of State Escort Interpreter, traveling with official guests of the U.S. Government. He was Director of St. Cloud State University's study abroad program in France in 1982 and 1984. He has lived and worked in Paris and enjoys showing friends the attractions of the City of Light.  Dr. Kaplan currently teaches French at MSUM.

1.Budget is an estimate for expected costs of the given study abroad program.All costs (airfare, hotels, transportation, etc) are subject to change without notice.

2.  Individual budgets will vary depending upon personal spending habits.

3.Expenses paid in Euros (lodging, metro tickets, admission fees, etc) are subject to change with fluctuations in the exchange rate.This budget is calculated at 1 Euro = $1.40

4.Budget will be altered slightly depending upon number of participants.Current budget assumes 10 participants.

5. Insurance is required of all participants.  MSUM will purchase a group package on the students' behalf prior to departure.  Students will be billed for insurance at that time. 

Students taking the tour for credit may be eligible for financial aid.  Please speak with a Study Abroad Advisor for more information. 

Payments and Withdrawal:  A $150 non-refundable deposit is due upon application, which will be applied towards the program fee.  A payment of $450 will be due December 8.  A second payment of $450 will be due January 16.  A final payment for the balance of the program fee will be due February 6.  After the airline ticket is issued, it becomes the responsibility of the participant to pursue refunds with the airlines if they withdrawl. 

Students paying for the tour through financial aid will not be required to make payments until after financial aid is released. Students paying for the tour through financial aid are still required to pay the $150 application deposit. 

Withdrawal from the tour must be submitted to the Office of International Programs in writing before December 1.  A refund of any money paid towards the tour, minus the $150 non-refundable deposit, will be made.  For students withdrawing after this date, refunds will be dependent upon MSUM's ability to recover any payments already made on the student's behalf. 

If for any reason a student applies to the tour but is not accepted, the $150 deposit will be refunded. 

Eligibility: The study tour is open to anyone, pending instructor approval.  The tour is limited to 20 participants.No prior knowledge of French is required.
