Symantec Value License Agreement FAQ

Minnesota State University Moorhead is enrolled in the Symantec Value License Program through a special agreement negotiated by the MnSCU system office. This agreement provides the university with renewable rights to install Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition on our campus computers.

What does the Value License Program provide?

The Value License Program gives the university the right to install and run the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition software on all university-owned computers for the length of the contract. It also allows university employees to run the software on home computers under certain conditions.

Can I install Symantec Antivirus on my home computer?

Under the Value License Program, permanent university employees may install one copy of the software on a laptop or home computer provided employee's primary use of that computer is work-related.

Can students install Symantec AntiVirus software on their home computers?

No. The Program does not include a student option.

Is there an antivirus alternative for students and employee computers that don't qualify for Work-At-Home software?

Yes. AVG offers free antivirus software for personal use from Grisoft. This product is a good choice for student-owned computers and employee-owned computers that are not eligible for Virex or Symantec.

How can I access the Value License Program policies?

What operating systems are supported through this program?

As of August 2006, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 98 are supported. Macintosh computers are protected with Virex.

Will Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition run on my computer?

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition requires specific computer resources and may not run well on older computers. The Symantec system requirements are available online.

How do I know which version to run on my computer?

The software installation is defined by your operating system. If you attempt to install the software on a computer that does not meet the Symantec specifications, you virus protection may not work.

Once I install Symantec Antivirus on my computer, am I completely protected against viruses?

Installing Symantec Antivirus on your computer is only the first step to protecting your computer from virus infection. You must update the virus software regularly, to maintain the protection. We recommend that you run the LiveUpdate utility once a week to maintain your virus protection. Complete instructions are printed on the instruction sheet you will receive when you check out the software.

How can I get Symantec Antivirus installed on my office computer?

Symantec Antivirus software is installed on each new computer. Campus installations are set to update automatically each time the computer is started. If you have concerns that your antivirus software is not updating,  email support@mnstate.edu or call the Information Technology Department. Additional information is available online.

How can I get the software to install it on my home computer?

You may check out the software from the Information Technology Department AFTER you complete an Employee Users Acceptance form. Complete instructions for checkout are online.

Where can I get the Employee Users Acceptance form?

The Employee Users Acceptance form is available online as a printable-pdf file or you may pick one up from the Information Technology Department.

What kind of support will the Information Technology Department provide if I have problems with my home computer?

Support for home computers will be limited to allowing you to checkout the CD again to reinstall the software.
