MSUM-Wireless Network

Wireless Installation for 64 Bit Windows
MSUM uses VPN software to encrypt traffic and authenticate windows users to the msum-wireless network. There are two methods for configuring msum-wireless on 64 Bit operating systems.

  1. Automatic installation and configuration through MSUM Portal

  2. Manual Installation and configuration

Requirements
In order to configure for and use wireless services provided by MSUM, you must:

  • Be a current student, faculty, or staff member at MSUM
  • Have 64-bit Windows Vista or Windows XP
  • Have installed and configured a 802.11b or 802.11g compatible wireless network card or have 802.11b or 802.11g capabilities built-in to your laptop or hand-held device. A 802.11a wireless card will not work.

Method 1: Automatic Installation Instructions through MSUM Portal

Step 1: Connect to the MSUM-Wireless Network or on campus LAN connection
The wireless network is called "MSUM-Wireless" in all areas on campus except in residence halls. By default, most computers should automatically connect to this network. Should your computer give you an error about connecting to an insecure network, disregard this error and connect anyway.

Note: In residence halls you should connect to "GoMoorhead-MSUM".  You do not have to run the VPN Client to access the internet when connected to the "GoMoorhead-MSUM" network.

If you connect to any other network on campus, please disconnect and notify the IT department at #2603. Any other wireless network on campus is most likely not authorized and may be be incorrectly setup leaving your privacy and personal data at risk.

Step 2: Install VPN Client Software
MSUM uses VPN software to encrypt traffic and authenticate windows users to the msum-wireless network.

  1. Open Browser and go to https://msum1.mnstate.edu
  2. Login using email address name and password ( DO NO INCLUDE THE @mnstate.edu)
  3. Click on the AnyConnect Tab

  4. Click on Start Any Connect

This will download and install the client. You may see errors with regards to Java being outdated or missing. Agree with the prompts to allow the necessary updated files to be installed.

You will then be connected to the VPN Portal Service.

In the future, just connect to https://msum1.mnstate.edu and login with your email username and password to connect to the VPN Service.

Method 2: Manual Installation Instructions

Step 1: Download and Save the file
Download the VPN client software by clicking on web.mnstate.edu/it/wireless/anyconnect-win.msi and save to your desktop.

Step 2: Install VPN Client Software

  1. Double click on the anyconnect-win.msi file and click OK or Continue at all the prompts.
  2. Go to Start > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client folder and click on the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client shortcut. When starting the Client for the first time, the Connection Name will be blank. Enter msum1.mnstate.edu and press Connect.
  3. You will be prompted for a username and password. Enter your DragonMail (email) username and password and press Connect.
  4. When you are successfully connected the MSUM Campus profile has been downloaded and installed.

To connect to the VPN in the future, follow 2 & 3 above.

NOTE: If you follow the steps above and are unable to connect to MSUM-Wireless, bring your laptop to the IT Help Desk on the second floor of the Library by the 24-hour labs when the lab assistants are on duty. The lab assistant will assist you.
