Study Abroad Programs

Students who are studying in the Department are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.  Studying abroad completely immerses students in the language and culture of the study abroad program.

Students who wish to study abroad should work closely with their faculty adviser to plan a course of study that will apply to their major and minor coursework at MSUM..

Departmental exchange programs include:

Spanish:  Over the years, we have led programs to Spain, Mexico (Cuernavaca and Guanajuato) and Costa Rica. The department's program for Spring 2011 will be to Ecuador. Students will enroll in Span 390 (2 cr) and travel to Ecuador over Spring Break.  Students will visit Quito, Otavalo and the Galapagos Islands.  Please contact Dr. Cecilia Mafla for more information or visit: web.mnstate.edu/studyabroad/Galapagos.cfm

Chinese:  For students in East Asian Studies wishing to focus on Chinese, Nankai University in Tianjin, China, offers them a study abroad opportunity.  Students can choose to study there for one semester or a whole year.  They will earn 12 - 16 credits per semester through Minnesota State University Moorhead while studying at Nankai University.  Students also have the option of earning credits through an internship in China.

Japanese:  East Asian Studies students interested in studying Japanese abroad have four exchange programs to consider:  Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in Chiba Japan which is near Tokyo, Kanto Gakuin University in Yokohama (a 4 month program, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and Nagoya Gakuin University in Nagoya Gakuin Seto, Japan.  Students with strong Japanese language skills and an interest in being fully immersed in the culture are encouraged to select an exchange at either University.  Each program is an intensive Japanese Language concentration.
