Dostoyevsky, Fyodor. Crime and Punishment. New York: Modern Library, 1994.
Dr. Mafla-Bustamante chose this book because:
“Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, was the first book I read in English (Thank God for translations!), and it did not only expose me to a new and rich vocabulary, but it also showed me love and hatred, humility, compassion, generosity, forgiveness, and faith. It is a psychological novel that deals with anxiety, remorse, guilt, and despair. It presents the social injustice of nineteenth century Russia, which is still present in the world today. I struggled reading the novel — accompanied by a Spanish/English dictionary — but it absorbed me so much that when I finished it, I felt sad to step out of that powerful fictional world. This novel opened my passion for the study of languages and literatures.”
