Designed for English 102, Professor Fasick, Spring 1998, and updated for Spring 2000, for help in tracking historical, religious, and mythological allusions in poetry.

This list of resources has been compiled to help you in your research into mythological and religious allusions in poetry and other literature. It is only a partial list. The Internet should be just one of the resources that you utilize in your research - consult a librarian for information on reference books in the library that may be helpful.

Etymology Resources

• Take Our Word For It -- A Weekly Etymology online magazine and mailing list. This link takes you to a searchable database of word meanings that have been discussed. Could be good for generating ideas or following hunches, but don't use it as the last word. Check the Oxford English Dictionary and other scholarly resources too.
  
  

Mythological Resources

• Yes! It's an updated and hyperlinked version of Bulfinch's Mythology-- part of the Age of Fable web site.
  
  
• Mythological Characters (J. Criss) -- Greek, Roman, African, and Asian mythology -- mostly only descriptions of gods and goddesses.
  
  
• The Book of Gods, Goddesses, Heroes..., by P. J. Criss -- Includes links to "Mythological Characters from Around the World, by Culture", along with Myths and Folklore from around the world.
  
  
• Perseus Project -- Online texts, translations, and more. Includes Greek and Latin word search tools and an encyclopedia.
  
  
• Yahoo's Greek Mythology & Folklore links

Biblical/Religious Resources

• What is a Concordance? -- If you don't know, read this page before you begin trying to track down Biblical terms and passages.
  
  
• Blueletter Bible (searchable concordance).
  
  
• WWW Bible Gateway -- Search the Bible in several languages
  
  
• Goshen's Multi-Translation Bible Concordance -- keyword searchable.
  
  
• Bible Study Tools -- Includes a searchable database of the Bible.
  
  
• The Koran -- Searchable version translated by M.H. Shakir and published by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Inc., in 1983. The text was provided by the Online Book Initiative.

Thomas Hardy resources

• "Channel Firing", a poem. Just the poem -- no critical remarks.

• The Thomas Hardy Society -- Includes links to downloadable texts; critical resources; and more. (Concentrates on novels).

W. B. Yeats resources

• Yahoo's Yeats' Poetry Links -- Gateway to many Yeats resources.
  
  
• Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats -- Click on "Contents with Poem Titles," then find the desired poem within the anthology. For example, I found "The Second Coming" in the electronic book, Michael Robartes and the Dancer
  
  
• Critically Yeats -- Links to poetry collections/anthologies, homepages, and more.
• Literary Resources on the Net -- by Jack Lynch, Rutgers, includes Classical, Biblical, Medieval, Renaissance, 18th Century, Romantic, Victorian, and Twentieth Century Resources.
