This list of resources has been compiled to help you in your research into mythological
and religious allusions in poetry and other literature. It is only a partial list. The
Internet should be just one of the resources that you utilize in your research - consult a
librarian for information on reference books in the library that may be helpful.
Etymology Resources
- Take Our Word For It -- A Weekly
Etymology online magazine and mailing list. This link takes you to a searchable database
of word meanings that have been discussed. Could be good for generating ideas or following
hunches, but don't use it as the last word. Check the Oxford English Dictionary
and other scholarly resources too.
Mythological Resources
- Yes! It's an updated and hyperlinked version of Bulfinch's Mythology--
part of the Age of Fable web site.
- Mythological Characters
(J. Criss) -- Greek, Roman, African, and Asian mythology -- mostly only descriptions of
gods and goddesses.
- The Book of Gods, Goddesses,
Heroes..., by P. J. Criss -- Includes links to "Mythological Characters from
Around the World, by Culture", along with Myths and Folklore from around the world.
- Perseus Project -- Online texts,
translations, and more. Includes Greek and Latin word search tools and an encyclopedia.
