Use the online catalog, MnPALS, to search for books on your issue.  MnPALS is on the Library HomePage

The following series of books are known for covering current topics and issues.

Opposing Viewpoints Series

Excellent for covering both sides of an issue. Pro- and con- -- will give good ideas for a persuasive speech.

To locate one of these books, do a keyword search in MnPALS for "opposing viewpoints" and add your topic, such as "capital punishment," "vietnam," "elderly," etc.

Reference Shelf Series

Gives valuable background and both sides of an issue. To locate one of these books, do a keyword search in MnPALS for "reference shelf" and add your topic, such as "crime," "television," "internet," "nuclear arms," etc.

Academic Search Premier  - EBSCO
This resource contains full text for nearly 3,400 scholarly publications. This collection provides full text journal coverage for nearly all academic areas of study - including social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.

This multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 2,050 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes more than 350 full text reference books, 84,606 biographies, 88,463 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags.

CINAHL - ProQuest
Designed specifically for nursing programs in academic institutions as well as hospital libraries, CINAHL PlusText covers a wide range of topics, including nursing, allied health, alternative therapies, biomedicine, consumer health, athletic training and health administration. This database offers over 1,200 titles (with more than 260 in full text) and coverage from 1982 to the present.

ERIC Database - CSA
The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to educational-related literature. The ERIC database corresponds to two printed journals: Resources in Education (RIE) and Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). Both journals provide access to some 14,000 documents and over 20,000 journal articles per year.

As the world’s largest full text business database, Business Source Premier provides full text for more than 8,500 scholarly business journals and other sources, including full text for more than 1,100 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 350 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.
