Goals and Objectives

1.  Knowledge of selected pedagogical materials

2.  Knowledge of teaching techniques for beginning skills and note reading

3.  Knowledge of strategies involved in effective piano practice

4.  Knowledge of correct posture, use of the body, and the development of injury-free piano technique

5.  Knowledge of how to teach music readiness, ear training, basic theory concepts, and music by rote

Required Projects

1.  Method Assessment:  each student will evaluate an assigned piano teaching method and present findings and recommendations orally to the class.  No document is required.  Specific information regarding format, length of presentation, and depth of analysis will be provided.

2.  Teaching Concept Presentation:  each student will be assigned a piano teaching 'concept'.  Students will prepare a strategy for teaching the concept to a beginning level piano student.  No document is required.  Keyboard Pedagogy students will present their teaching strategy to the class, demonstrating their plan by using a classmate as a practice piano student.  Visual aids and other teaching tools (such as rhythm instruments) may be used.

3.       Teaching-Aid Development:  each student will develop some sort of musical game

which teaches and/or reinforces basic music concepts.  Possibilities include (but are not limited to) flash cards, rhythm games, musical board games, musical twister, devices for teaching music notation.  One class meeting within the last week of classes will be devoted to 'playing' these games.

4.  Development of a Studio Policy:  each student will develop and prepare a Studio Policy which addresses the necessary elements as presented within the Keyboard Pedagogy course.  Studio Policies are due on the last class meeting of the course.  Each student must provide a copy of his/her Studio Policy for each classmate.
