Announcements/Updates
1.)
NDSU
Videos and Website --
Sandy announced that she has ordered the Shadow of Hate and A Place
at the Table kits from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
She is willing to share them with everyone. She also announced that the NDSU Diversity Council has a new
website: www.ndsu.edu/diversity.
Amy said she would have
the NDSU website linked to the TOCAR website.
Amy asked that if any
of the other campuses have sites they want linked to TOCAR to let
her know.
NDUS initiative -- Sandy reported that Paul Boswell is still working
on getting a date for the North Dakota University System Diversity
Council to have its first anti-racism training with MCARI.
Anti-racism training -- NDSU will be sponsoring another anti-racism
training on February 20 and 2 UND Law School faculty will be
attending that training. The
UND Law School is in the process of setting up an anti-racism
initiative. Amy and Phyllis will be speaking with them about TOCAR on
January 31.
Women's Week -- Sandy announced that Women's Week at NDSU is the
last week in February.
Safe School Legislation -- Larry announced that "Equality North
Dakota" is promoting "safe schools" legislation. This
legislation will support school-based efforts to respond to bullying
and harassment. Contact
Larry if you would like more information on this legislation.
2.) MSUM
MLK, Jr. Celebration -- Abner told the group about MSUM's upcoming
Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration that will take place on January
23 at 7:30pm in Hansen Theatre on the MSUM campus.
Tess Arenas -- Phyllis reminded the group about Tess Arenas' visit
to Moorhead in February and that Tess will be meeting with the
Collaborative on February 20 and with students from all 4 campuses
that same evening at NTC. Lysa
asked that Tess be reminded that the YWCA is also part of the
Collaborative and that Tess take this into consideration when
providing consultation to the Collaborative. Amy
and Phyllis will talk with Tess about this.
Anti-racism trainings -- Amy detailed the anti-racism trainings that
will be taking place on the MSUM campus in February:
February 11 and 12 will be trainings for AFSCME membership
(staff); February 13 and 21 will be faculty training and February 22
will be a student training. Although
the trainings are divided according to constituency, individuals may
attend whichever training is most convenient for them.
Amy asked that Collaborative members have names ready of
individuals from their institutions who would like to be in a
training in the event that these trainings do not fill with MSUM
staff and faculty. Amy will contact the Collaborative within the next two weeks regarding
openings in the trainings.
NCTE conference presentation
-- Phyllis reported that members of the TOCAR Institutional
Assessment Committee would be making a presentation on the TOCAR
survey at a conference of the National Council of Teachers of
English in February at the University of Minnesota. Unfortunately,
only MSUM committee members are able to present.
Michelle noted that she would be interested in going if there
was financial support and Larry said that he's planning on attending
the conference anyway so he would be available.
Phyllis and Amy will
talk with Larry and Michelle about being co-presenters.
MnSCU conference presentation -- Phyllis also reported on the MnSCU-sponsored
conference in February on best practices in recruitment and
retention of students of color.
Claudia, Amy, Phyllis, and Raul Ramos (MnSCU staff) will be
presenting on TOCAR. Phyllis
also noted that the Bremer Foundation has provided money to MnSCU
for support of anti-racism/diversity initiatives on all MnSCU
campuses.
3.)
Northwest Technical College
Student forum --
Claudia reported that NTC is preparing for the student forum on
February 20. NTC will
be providing the meeting space and catering for the event.
Institutional assessment -- Claudia mentioned that NTC will be
undertaking a modified version of the TOCAR survey which will
incorporate 20 core questions about diversity which the MnSCU
Chancellor's office is asking all MnSCU campuses to administer.
Claudia noted that NTC TOCAR is also in the process of
building its membership.
4.)
YWCA
YWCA team -- Lysa
reported that the YWCA anti-racsim team continues to meet and that
the Y's Board has approved use of unrestricted funds for the
anti-racism initiative. The team also continues to build institutional support for
the team's work.
5.)
Concordia
Earl Lewis -- Joy
reported on a productive meeting with a Concordia alum of color,
Earl Lewis, who is a Dean in the U. of Michigan system, Concordia's
December commencement speaker, and a friend of Joy's.
Collaborative members talked about inviting Mr. Lewis back to
town to meet with the Collaborative.
Joy will ask him about
this possibility.
ELCA training --
Joy, Chelle, and JJ discussed the recent ELCA anti-racism training
for trainers that was attended by JJ, Chelle, Harvey Stalwick, and
Jim Postema. Chelle reviewed the content and processes of the training.
She said the training focuses on multiple ways of knowing,
building authentic relationships, and use of Bible stories for
teaching and training about anti-racism.
Chelle and JJ reported that the training was excellent and
provided a lot of flexibility for different kinds of trainings. They will be speaking to classes regarding
anti-racism/diversity issues. Another
ELCA training will be taking place on March 1. The cost is
$40/person, $25 for students. On
March 19, ELCA staff will be coming to Concordia to work with campus
and community people around these issues.
The Concordia ELCA-trained people will be willing to provide
training to other groups besides Concordia.
TEAGLE survey --
On January 17, 9:20-10:20, the results from the TEAGLE survey will
be discussed on the Concordia campus.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Faculty workshops
-- Michelle announced that "Faculty Teaching Against
Racism" workshops will again be offered on the Concordia campus
to Concordia faculty.
Clifton Taulbert
-- JJ reminded the group of the upcoming Clifton Taulbert lectures. The first will be on the evening of January 19 in Concordia's
Memorial Auditorium. A
social justice fair will be at 6pm in which 10 community groups will
have table displays of their work.
Michelle volunteered to set up and stand at the TOCAR table.
Taulbert will also speak at 10:00am on Monday the 20th
in the Memorial Auditorium.
IV.
Institutional Assessment
Amy and Phyllis reported that the survey for
faculty/staff/administrators is finally on its final draft.
The committee is meeting on the 15th to look
through it one more time. It
will then go to IRBs. MSUM,
Concordia, and NDSU will be administering the entire survey, NTC
will be administering a shortened version. Chelle asked if TOCAR
would be providing financial support to the campuses for incentives.
Phyllis responded that
there is money for incentives for each campus and that each campus
will be notified of how much is available once she has an
opportunity to take another look at the original budget.
V.
Student Forum at NTC
Phyllis, Amy, and Claudia discussed the student forum at NTC
on February 20. This is
a good opportunity for students from all 4 campuses, particularly
students of color, to come together to discuss campus climate,
anti-racism, diversity initiatives, personal experiences, etc.
Tess Arenas will be present to hear what the students have to
say and talk with them about the issues.
The event will be student planned and facilitated.
The Cultural Diversity subcommittee of the MSUM Student
Senate has agreed to take the lead on planning the event but wants
the involvement of students from other campuses.
Everyone should
contact Amy with names/emails of students who would be interested in
helping plan the event. She
will then forward these names onto Linda Palmer of the CD
subcommittee (who is also a TOCAR participant).
VI.
Phase III training
Amy announced that she and Phyllis had been talking about the
Phase III training that was being planned for this summer and they
wondered if it is too soon to have it.
Everyone seemed to give a collective sigh of relief and
agreed that a Phase III training this summer was too soon.
Larry suggested an end of academic year celebration instead.
Everyone enthusiastically agreed with this idea.
And it was also suggested that a beginning of the school year
get-together could also be planned.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 5:30pm
