Trainings
Chelle Lyons proposed collaborating with the YWCA for
the Level II training in June.
This
joint training would possibly save both groups money and would
also be a step for both
groups in building community allies.
YWCA plans to commission its leadership team by
March 1. The
Collaborative discussed this proposal and agreed to
participate in the Level
II training with the YWCA, if MCARI gives the OK.
Phyllis and Amy
will contact
MCARI about this request.
V.
Spring Planning
I.
Assessment- Kay Schneider (Chair)
Kay
reported on the first meeting of the Institutional Assessment
Committee which met the hour just prior to this Collaborative
meeting. The IAC is developing its purpose, goals, need of
focus groups, and issues to address with the survey.
Kay said that the committee is eager to begin its work
and will be meeting again soon to further plan its work.
II. Community Study Circles: April 2, 9, 16
Phyllis reported on plans by MSUM to sponsor another
three study circle session
this coming April. These study circles offer TOCAR an
opportunity to gather more
information from the community and campuses in order to inform
the institutional
assessment survey and its work in general.
Tentatively, the 3 study circle sessions
will address the following questions:
Session
1. What progress
has been made since last year's study circle sessions?
What priorities does the community have?
Session
2. How can
higher ed help preK-12 and vice versa?
Session
3. What
kind of partnerships, education, assistance is needed between
higher ed and the business community and the media?
Larry and Harvey suggested contacting the Project
Tomorrow people regarding
their involvement in the third session.
Phyllis, Amy, Claudia, and Teresa will
comprise the TOCAR study circle committee and will refine the
agenda for
the sessions and report back to the Collaborative at the next
meeting.
VI.
TOCAR Theory (Phyllis)
Phyllis presented the theoretical framework for TOCAR's
work , showing how the initiative
is attempting to move beyond a model of cultural diversity to
an Anti-Racist, Multicultural,
Community-Based Model. Characteristics of this model include:
1.
Its focus on partnership with the larger community
2.
Its focus on dismantling systemic racism
3.
Its focus on the interactions of multiple cultural
groups.
Minutes submitted by September Luitjens, MSUM.
