TOCAR Collaborative
Minutes
October 8, 2002
Northwest Technical College
Present:
Roderick McCall (NTC); Ted Guerrero (NTC); Claudia Simon (NTC);
Laura Oster-Aaland (NDSU); Sandy Holbrook (NDSU); Chelle Lyons
Hanson (YWCA, Concordia); Lysa Ringquist (YWCA); Phyllis May-Machunda
(MSUM); Johnathan Judd (Concordia); Jesse Rapp (Concordia);
Christine Chapweske (YWCA); Amy Phillips (MSUM).
I. Introductions
Institutional
representatives for the TOCAR Collaborative met at 3:30 p.m. on the
campus of Northwest Technical College in Moorhead.
Amy noted that the individual campuses are invited to send
her the minutes of their campus TOCAR meetings and she will have
them posted on the TOCAR web site; institutions and the YWCA are
encouraged to link to the TOCAR site from appropriate web sites they
may have.
II. Next Meeting
The
next TOCAR meeting will be November 12 at 4:00 on the MSUM campus
and the December meeting (Dec. 10) will be at 4:00 p.m. on the NDSU
campus. Exact locations
will be announced closer to the meetings dates.
Chelly asked that the two YWCA representatives to the
Collaborative be added to the TOCAR listserv and Amy will take care
of that.
III.
Updates
As
part of the update portion of the meeting, Amy reported about the
presentation that she and Larry Peterson made to the Rotary Club in
September.
Phyllis
reported that an art class at MSUM had created a number of possible
logos for TOCAR. Phyllis
reviewed them all and they are posted and may be seen on the MSUM
campus (check with Phyllis or Amy for exact location) for at least
the next couple of weeks. A selected group from these logos will be
shown at the November TOCAR meeting.
Representatives from the other campuses were encouraged to
see if they have classes that would like to propose logos for TOCAR
as well.
Phyllis
reported about conversations she has had with Jim and Carmen about
future training. They
will be doing a Level 1 training at the YWCA on Saturday, October 26
(a few spots are available if there people on the four campuses who
want to attend). They
want to meet with TOCAR representatives sometime after 3:00 p.m. on
Friday, October 25. Future training will be the main focus of discussion.
They are interested in offering a Level 3 training in F-M,
but the Bremer grant does not have funding for that training.
There was some discussion of possible ways to fund the Level
3 training which lasts 4 days.
The training could be done on 2 weekends versus 4 days, but
the consensus seemed to be for 4 days at once – perhaps next June
about the same time as the Level 2 training last June.
Options for additional Level 1 trainings on our campuses will
also be discussed at the October 25 meeting.
IV. Institutional Assessment Committee Report
Amy
reminded representatives about Kay Schneider’s recent e-mail
requesting feedback about the latest version.
Each campus should have at least one TOCAR person take the
assessment and send suggestions/concerns/questions, etc. to Kay by
Friday, October 11. The
survey will probably be administered on the Web.
NDSU noted they would like to administer it to a sample
rather than all faculty and staff to avoid duplication with the
climate assessment they are planning for spring semester.
V. Bremer First Year Report
Phyllis
and Amy shared a draft of the first year report and asked for input
from each campus. Each
campus should e-mail a 1-2 page summary of their TOCAR related
activities to Amy by the week of October 21.
The summary should focus on activities
and impact (not in a scientific sense necessarily) in terms of tangible
results. A description
of the anti-racism team and the campus TOCAR structure should be
included. Claudia
agreed to do the NTC report, Johnathan the Concordia report and
Sandy the NDSU report.
VI. Campus Updates
Concordia
Jonathan
reported that they are working on the wall of history.
Principia is having a training session in November using the
video “True Colors” and two panels.
They will repeat this training in the spring.
One issue is that people have limited time so that slows
progress but people are working hard.
NTC
The
campus team meets regularly and student interest is good.
The new interim president is supportive of the TOCAR
involvement. The noon
brown bag talks are continuing and the student senate has allocated
some financial support for TOCAR.
MSU-M
MSUM's
anti-racism team will be commissioned by President Barden on October
25 at the faculty in-service day.
NDSU
The
commissioning of the anti-racism team will be a part of the
President’s State of the University address on Thursday, October
17 at 12:30 pm in Festival Concert Hall.
The team is meeting every other week and have just about
completed a covenant agreement.
They are also working on the SWOT analysis of the history.
YWCA
The
Y’s anti-racism team meets regularly at the shelter. Training has been or will be conducted for all board members,
staff and residents at the shelter.
New staff will receive both Level 1 and Level 2 training. A commissioning of a new team is planned for the annual
meeting. The team is
working on a history of both the national and local YWCA and its
history of anti-racism work. The team is developing job descriptions
for the anti-racism team.
The
meeting was adjourned about 5:30 pm.
Recorder
for the day,
Sandy Holbrook
