Guest Artists

The MSUM Percussion Studio has become known as a place where students can meet, study, and perform with some of the greatest names in percussion! Guest artists who have performed and/or taught residencies at MSUM have included:

Peter Erskine at MSUM



Peter Erskine, the legendary multi-Grammy winning drummer with Stan Kenton, Weather Report, Steely Dan, the Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny, Gary Burton, and hundreds of world-class jazz and pop artists, spent two days at MSUM where he performed with the MSUM Jazz Ensemble and presented drumset clinics, lectures, and masterclasses.

The Spring 2010 Percussion Ensemble concert:  "Out of Africa," with guest artists Fode Bangoura (Guinea/Djembe), Whitney McClusky (Minneapolis/Dance), and Pempamsie West African Drum and Dance Ensemble.  Also featuring a world premier commissioned work for Percussion Ensemble by John Doing from the Spectrum Trio.


The Maraca2 Percussion Duo from England joined us for a four-day residency at MSUM followed by a performance at the International Marimba Festival in Minneapolis accompanied by members of the MSUM Percussion Ensemble.

2007 Spring PE Concert "Sonhando em Brasil" with guest artists Tisza Coelho and Cabello Rolim from Bahía, Brasil!

Sulley Norror, Ghanian Master Drummer and Dancer along with his ensemble "Kumiyaa,"
teaching a few moves and grooves to members of the Percussion Ensemble in a special masterclass!

The Trinidad Urban Ministries Steelband toured through our area and stopped for an evening performance and masterclass with members of Fuego Tropical!

The 2006 MSUM Day of Percussion

The 2006 Minnesota Day of Percussion was held at MSUM and featured internationally renown guest artists Lalo Davila (Latin percussion), Liam Teague (Steel Drums), and Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic (marimba). Aside from several days of rehersal and group lessons with the artists leading up to the event, MSUM students were able to enjoy a fantastic day of clinics and performances along with the general public and presented a steel drum and salsa blow-out concert that evening with Lalo and Liam!
