MSUM Interactive Electronica Ensemble

In 2003, Minnesota State University Moorhead's Department of Music replaced its New Music Ensemble with the innovative Interactive Electronica Ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. James Harley, the IEE applies digital audio technology to performance in creative ways. Students learn how to work with the various instruments and tools available, sometimes bringing in their own (turn-tables, electric guitars and related effects units, etc.). The ensemble develops its own repertoire on the basis of student ideas, guided improvisation, and compositional instructions. Visual media is also incorporated into the performances. The IEE has performed at the MSUM New Music/New Media Festival (Nov. 2003), the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art in Minneapolosi (Feb. 2004), and the MSUM Women's History Month (Mar. 2004), along with putting on its own events. Dr. Harley has successfully sought funding for the ensemble with an MSUM Lead Technology Faculty Mini-Grant and a MnSCU Center for Teaching and Learning Seed Grant. The IEE presently works with two Apple iBook computers, MIDI keyboard controllers, audio interfaces, microphones, digital mixer, and various software tools.

Joining the IEE

If you are interested in participating in the IEE, contact the Music Office at the begining of the semester to find out about the first organizational meeting. There is a limit to the number of students who may join the ensemble, so you will need to discuss your musical interests and experience working with technology with the Director in order to be accepted into the Ensemble.
