Senior Year Experience
Purpose
Senior Year Experience (SYE) is intended to address issues of transition from student to professional for Minnesota State University Moorhead seniors. By drawing upon both campus and community resources for course curriculum to match relevant concerns, the SYE program will be an engaging opportunity for seniors to reflect upon their MSUM experience and become productive and confident MSUM alumni.
Junior and seniors are welcome to register for Senior Year Experience.

Class Schedule
Ready for the Real World: Successfully Preparing
for Transition
- Participants will receive an overview of the
eight-week course and become aware of course expectations (i.e. active
participation in discussions, supportive of others, etc.), get to know
classmates better through icebreaker and other structured activities, recognize
the unique transitional phase they are experiencing as seniors and will share
concerns regarding change. Facilitator will discuss the nature of change and
look at ways to successfully deal with transition, and gain insight from a
panel discussion with recent MSUM alumni.Stories will be shared on how alumni successfully or not so successfully
navigated the transition from college to professional realm.
Careers
- Participants will receive pointers on how to
successfully market your liberal arts education to potential employers through
interviewing skills; learn about cover letters, resumes, job seeking skills,
and the "hidden" labor market; and become more familiar with applying
for graduate school.
Dollars and Sense: Personal Finance 101
- Participants will discuss and understand the
importance of managing personal finances, including saving, tracking income and
expenses, setting a budget, and investing; discuss and understand the
advantages and disadvantages between buying and renting a home; discuss the
value of employee benefits from a financial standpoint; and discuss credit
cards and credit reports.
Investment 101
- Participants will discuss the benefits of
investment, find out why a 401K is important and learn about stocks, mutual
funds, and bonds.
Civic Engagement - Be an Active Leader After
College
- Participants will discuss how graduates can get
involved in a new community; receive pointers on how to find volunteer
opportunities that fit with your personal values and abilities; learn about
social activism in your community; and learn about professional organizations
to become involved with after graduation.
Ethics in the Workplace
- Participants will discuss workplace ethics,
examining various ethical models and engaging in relevant case studies.
Dressing for Success
- Participants will become familiar with
situations demanding a working knowledge of social and /or workplace standard
of etiquette, and will learn strategies for how to successfully deal with such
situations and understand the importance of dress in creating a favorable
workplace impression.
Dinner Experience/Becoming an
Alum/Wrap-Up/Evaluation
- Participants will learn about Minnesota State
University Moorhead Alumni opportunities and benefits; attend a dinner designed
to build confidence when confronted with a fine dining experience such as one
might encounter during the job search process. Participants will learn about
how to navigate intricate table settings, appropriate use of flatware,
conversing while eating, and other potential social etiquette “pitfalls.”An etiquette expert will be on-hand to coach participants
through the dinner; review course content and share observations regarding
course experience and/or remaining concerns; and formally evaluate Senior Year
Experience by survey.
