New Rivers Press is one of two university-owned literary presses in the nation and publishes five to seven short stories, poetry collections, and other works each year. Renee Kerzman, Field Experiences and Dean Mollerud, School of Teaching and Learning, have piloted innovative technology to improve the clinical experiences of MSUM teacher candidates. They are observing and interacting with a classroom at Aldine (Houston) Independent School District, the 11th largest school district in Texas with 55,367 students. Aldine has been recognized by the state of Texas as the best large school district for educating Latino students and second in educating African American students. The teacher candidates interact and teach the classroom students by creating virtual field trips, content enhancement projects and mentoring activities to support the teacher’s instruction. The goal is to provide MSUM teacher candidates confidence in their ability to work with diverse, urban students.
The Biochemistry and Biotechnology program faculty partnered with three local companies—PRACS Institute, Clinical Supplies Management and Aldevron—to develop the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Industry Certificate. The program is a unique advanced training opportunity for individuals trained for biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemistry careers. The certificate is designed to meet the needs of the biochemistry and biotechnology industry in Minnesota, North Dakota and the Upper Midwest. The program targets traditional undergraduates entering the biochemistry and biotechnology workforce; incumbent workers seeking advancement; and displaced workers interested in new careers. The program will be offered at MSU Moorhead and in the Metro area on the North Hennepin Community College Campus.
The Biosciences and Chemistry Departments are partnering with the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation to obtain $930,000 in state and local funding to develop a Biochemistry and Biotechnology Incubator on the MSUM campus. This incubator would lease wet laboratory space to start-up biochemistry and biotechnology companies and provide support systems to help the companies grow and thrive in the Fargo-Moorhead community.
