Wildlife Biologist of staff in charge of census of marsh birds, colonial nesting birds, waterfowl, deer, moose, and other wildlife species. Development of annual water management plan on 28 managed pools and prescribed burning plans for 20,000 acres annually. Identify research needs and design and implement research studies to answer management concerns. Research projects an American bittern, gray wolves, grebes, heavy metal contaminants, transplanting wild rice and bulrush and biological control of Canada thistle have been designed and implemented in the past 5 years. Dr. John Toepfer and Gary Huschle coauthored a transplanted proposal for prairie chickens to translocate prairie chickens form Minnesota to eastern North Dakota. They implemented the proposal and successfully started a new population of prairie chicken north of Grand Forks, ND. Dr. Toepfer and Gary Huschle coauthored the seven-year research proposal A Study of the Life History of the American Bittern. They have been successful in implementing and completing Phase 1 and 2 of the proposal. Dr. Toepfer is using his wide range of experience with radio transmitter packages for birds to develop a satellite telemetry package for American bitterns with Microwave Telemetry. Huschle has gained experience on the administration of satellite telemetry operations with the gray wolf study at the refuge.
