Astronomy Nights

Astronomy nights are sponsored by the Regional Science Center. Their primary purpose is to observe the sky. Visitors view the sky with the naked eye, binoculars, small telescopes and the Paul Feder Observatory's sixteen inch telescope. Other activities may include a public lecture, trail walks, movies, make and take activities and opportunities to chat with amateur astronomers. Astronomy nights are usually held at the Regional Science Center's Buffalo River Site.

2010 EVENTS:

ASTRONOMY EVENTS AT THE BUFFALO RIVER SITE

Saturn: Lord of the Rings!

Friday, May 21, 2010   9-11  pm

This spring Saturn shines brightly in the southern sky. Learn more about this most famous "Lord of the Rings" and experience the wonder of looking at it through a telescope. A short presentation will take place in the interpretive center and then we will adjourn to the "theater of the sky" to look at Saturn and other celestial objects.

Star Party on the Prairie

Friday, August 13, 2010    9-11  pm

We're having a star party on the prairie and you are invited. Come and have the beautiful summer sky interpreted for you. Learn how to find the constellations. See the Milky Way, nebulae and star clusters through our telescopes. Perhaps we will see some meteors. Bring your own binoculars or telescope, if you wish, and enjoy the prairie at night. If it is cloudy we will have a short indoor presentation at 9 pm.

Jupiter Meets Uranus

Friday, September 17, 2010   8-10  pm

Uranus was discovered in 1781 by the English astronomer William Herschel. Although it is visible to the naked-eye under ideal conditions, most of the time this distant planet is difficult to distinguish from the myriad of faint stars visible on a dark night. This September, Jupiter is a beacon which points us directly to Uranus. Uranus, Jupiter, the Moon and other objects will be among the objects shown through telescopes at this public event.
