Guest Speaker Peggy Rittenhouse.
She will talk about TPA and what it means for education.

What is SCEC?

SCEC is the student chapter of the national Council for Exceptional Children organization. We are a group for education majors to develop as professionals and gain some awesome volunteer experiences.

      Why join SCEC?

*  To learn more about the Education field

*  It is a great opportunity for professional development

*  It is perfect for building your resume (volunteer experience and being part of a national organization for teachers)

*  To gain volunteer experience

*  If you Join the CEC now you can get a discounted rate that will carry through your first year as a teacher

*  It is a fun organization and we learn in the process!

*  By joining the CEC you can receive professional education journals in the field directly to your mailbox!

      *  Become a leader!

What does SCEC do?

* Professional Development Meetings

*  Service Projects- we are concentrating on two-three big projects this year, we'd like to do fewer of  them and do them big

*  Attend the Minnesota CEC conference.  Students have been able to attend the conference FREE of charge by volunteering at the conference.  Our local chapter has supported students by providing them with FREE travel to and from the conference as well.  Students who attend the state conference can apply for funds to attend the national conference at a very reasonable rate also!

What is SCEC doing now?

*Volunteering at Madison Elementary- You can tutor one day a week for only one hour! The hours are from 3pm to 4pm and you can go any day of the week! Members of SCEC provide support and direction in the form of tutoring for students through the Academic Coaching Program at Madison Elementary School in Fargo.

If you would like to participate in tutoring at Madison Elementary, please contact Ivy at: renneriv@mnstate.edu

       When and where do you meet for meetings?

*  We don't meet on specified dates, keep an eye out for flyers in LO hall and updates on the website

**We  also have a listserv to keep busy members involved in what we are doing.

How do I join the listserv?

Send an email to SCEC's President at scec@mnstate.edu

Can I join SCEC without joining the national CEC?

You do NOT need to be a member of the national CEC in order to be a member of SCEC. It is just an added bonus to be able to join the national group at a discounted student rate ($60/year now through your first year as a teacher compared to joining later at $120/year). **You do need to be a member of the national organization to receive the professional journals and attend the conferences.
