TOP 20 QUESTIONS ASKED BY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS STUDENTS AT MSUM
| 1. | What is the 45-hour Liberal Studies requirement? | All MSUM baccalaureate degree programs require completion of at least 45 semester hours of Liberal Studies. See the curriculum worksheet for your major for the minimum credits required in categories A-F. Some students may have Liberal Studies waived. See your academic advisor for details. | ||
| 2. | What is the 64-hour non-business requirement? | At least half (64) of the 128 semester hours required for graduation with a School of Business major must be non-business hours. Non-business hours are any credits except those with the following rubric: ACCT, BUS, FINC, MGMT, and MKTG. Up to 9 semester hours of ECON are also non-business credits. | ||
| 3. | What are related requirements? | In the School of Business, the following courses are related requirements for all majors: CSIS 103, ECON 202 & 204, ENGL 387 or SPCH 301, MATH 229 & 234, SPCH 100, SOC 110 or PSY 113, one F course and one F1 course. All School of Business majors except Accounting have one additional related requirement: SOC 205 or PSY 120. | ||

| 5. | Are my liberal studies waived if I have an AA (Associates of Art) degree from a two-year institution? | Yes, generally your liberal studies are waived if you have an AA degree. However, neither the 64 non-business hour requirement nor the related requirements are waived for School of Business majors. | ||
| 6. | What do I need to do to earn a School of Business major if I have a degree from a four-year institution? | You must complete all related requirements and required courses for the School of Business major you are pursuing. Students who are seeking a second baccalaureate degree must complete at least 30 credits at MSUM. | ||

| 8. | How do I get admitted to the School of Business? | You must complete an Application for Admission form and meet the requirements for Admission to the School of Business. Click on Admission on the School of Business web page for the Admission requirements. Click on Forms under Admission on the School of Business web page for the Application for Admission form. | ||
| 9. | What is the One-Semester Enrollment all about? | Transfer students or MSUM students may get "off sequence" by not having courses accepted in transfer, by having to repeat courses, or by not taking appropriate courses in their first two years of college. The one-semester enrollment privilege allows students who are in the process of completing the course requirements for admission, to take upper-level School of Business courses for one semester so that they may take a full course load. | ||
| 10. | May I double major (declare more than one major)? | Yes, complete the gold Major/Advisor Change Form to add a second major. Continue to meet with your primary advisor for your first major. It is a good idea to have an informal academic advisor in the department of your second major and meet with that advisor on a regular basis. | ||
| 11. | How do I declare a minor in the School of Business? | Complete the gold Major/Advisor Change Form to add a School of Business Minor. You will need to do this to enroll in upper-level School of Business courses required for your minor. | ||
| 12. | How does advising work in the School of Business? | Unless you are an accounting major, Peggy Dell will be your academic advisor up until the time you are admitted to the School of Business. Once you have been admitted to the School of Business, you will be assigned an academic advisor who is a faculty member in your major area of study. Accounting majors are advised by faculty members in Accounting. | ||
| 13. | What student organizations may I join in the School of Business? | The School of Business has the following student organizations which you may want to check out: Financial Management Association (student organization for those interested in Accounting or Finance), Pi Sigma Epsilon (business fraternity with a focus on marketing), and Delta Mu Delta (National Honorary Society for students in business--by invitation only). |

| 14. | What should I do if I took business or related requirement courses at another institution? | You should meet with Yvonne Johnson, Transfer Advisor. She will evaluate your business courses and related requirements to determine if we will accept them in transfer. | ||
| 15. | What should I do if I believe a grade recorded by a Professor for me is incorrect or unfair? | You should meet with the professor to check the grades recorded for you. If you still believe you are being treated unfairly, you may consult with the Co-Chairs of School of Business. If the matter is still not resolved, you must discuss the issue with the Dean in whose College the course was offered. The final step is to file a formal grade appeal. For a copy of MSUM's grade appeal policy, go to Academic Affairs web page, click on Department, and click on Course Grade Appeals policy. | ||
| 16. | When and how do I repeat a course? | You may repeat a course if you earned the grade of "D" or "F". Complete a green Repeated Course Form and have the instructor and Chair of the Department sign the Form. Return it to the Records Office. | ||
| 17. | Is there a maximum number of credits I may take during a semester? | Yes, if you have completed fewer than 64 semester hours, you may not take more than 18 credits (9 credits during a summer session) without the prior approval of your academic advisor and the Dean of the College of Business and Industry. If you have more completed 64 semester hours, you may not take more than 20 credits without the prior approval of your advisor and the Dean. Complete the beige Excess Credits Form, obtain the necessary signatures and return it to the Records Office. | ||
| 18. | What if I take a semester (or more) off from school and then come back? | Students who leave MSUM for one or more semesters need to reapply for admission by completing a readmission form. If the curriculum for the School of Business major or minor you are pursuing changes while you are gone, you must follow the new curriculum if you have been gone for more than one year. | ||
| 19. | What are the requirements to graduate with a major in the School of Business? | Generally, you must have:(1) 128 credits; (2) 64 non-business credits (including 45 liberal studies in categories A-F); (3) 64 credits from a 4-year institution (if you enrolled in 1997 or earlier); (4) 43 semester hours in upper division (300/400 level) courses if you enrolled in 1998 or later; (4) overall MSUM GPA of 2.25; (5) major, minor, and Liberal Studies MSUM GPA of 2.0; (6) completion of related requirements, business core and major requirements; and (7) at least half of the course requirements for the School of Business major must be earned at MSUM. | 20. | What process do I need to go through to graduate? | Apply for graduation one semester in advance by completing the Preliminary Notice of Application for Graduation, the Application for Graduation, the Graduating Senior Survey and participate in any other assessment measures established by the School of Business. It's a good idea to meet with your academic advisor before you complete the forms for guidance and helpful hints. |
