About Moorhead Minnesota

City and Location

Moorhead, Minnesota and its sister city of Fargo, North Dakota lies in the Red River Valley of the North, amidst prime agricultural land. The naturally fertile soils originate from Glacial Lake Agassiz which flooded the valley during the last glacial event and deposited the materials that became the soil we use today.  Once known as the “Breadbasket of the World,” the Red River Valley ships world-class food and farm equipment and products around the globe.

Education is Number One

Moorhead and Fargo have four significant post-secondary institutions, Minnesota State University Moorhead, North Dakota State University, Concordia College, and Minnesota State Community and Technical College, with over 25,000 students attending their undergraduate programs.

What to do

We're proud of our local history and our attractions show it off well! Plan your day to suit all your interests.

Want Art & Theater

Plains Art Museum renovated a turn-of-the-century warehouse in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, and opened to the public in October 1997.  In May the Museum will have in the permanent exhibition hall an interpretation of the Museum's collection through The Beatles' White Album, and in the other two galleries an exhibition entitled "Individual to Icon: Portraits of the Famous from Folk Art to Facebook."

The Fargo Theater has developed into the region's only "art house" cinema, presenting first-run independent and foreign films on a regular basis. Its screen still blends gems from the past - from the silents to contemporary classics. The Fargo Theatre remains the only theatre in the area with capabilities for 16-mm, 35-mm, and 70-mm film presentations. The Mighty WurliTzer rises from the pit each weekend for live intermission music, provided by the American Theatre Organ Society.  Check the web site for current showings.

The Hjemkomst Center provides interpretation of the Hjemkomst Viking Ship, Hopperstad Stave Church Replica, Red River Valley Exhibition and hosts traveling exhibits in 7,000 sq. feet of temporary exhibition space. The interpretive center offers tours, lectures and festivals, hosts residencies and performances and provides educational services.  Check the web site for current exhibits.
