HIST 362 -- US Civil War and Reconstruction

Syllabus

Texts:

James M. McPherson, Battle Cry of Freedom:  The Civil War Era.  This is the current standard for a one-volume history of the Civil War.  Very well written, it is available as a paperback and in ebook format (Nook and Kindle).

Chandra Manning, What This Cruel War was Over.  Manning argues that slavery was the main cause of the war and the main issue that most soldiers on both sides were fighting over.  Available in both paper and ebook.

Stephen Ash, When the Yankees Came.  Ash takes a detailed look at how southern communities behaved while under Union Army occupation.  Available in both paper and ebook.

EXAM 2 (due April 16) Answer the following question in about 1000 words (3-4 pages):  In creating its own plan for the Reconstruction of the Confederate states, did the US Congress act  to "restore the nation while protecting the rights of the freed slaves" or did they act to protect the political gains of the Republican Party and the financial gains of the 1860s economic legislation for railroads, paper money, etc.?  Support your argument with readings, etc.
