MSUM Flood Closure Plan

In the event springtime flooding forces the closure of MSUM we will continue with our coursework electronically.  The main method of delivery will be the common course calendar webpage  (http://www.mnstate.edu/taylorse/course_i_teach/history-101-critical-issues-2/) for the list of daily readings and assignments, and Nicenet for common communication.  Each section will make use of both email and, most importantly, the conferencing section.

Conferencing will be used in two ways in case of MSUM closure.  1) Posting your papers.  You are doing this already in the context of the game--it just becomes more important with the closure. 2) IN THE EVENT OF CLOSURE daily class discussion will carry on via Conferencing.  For each class day we are closed I will post a conferencing section that will allow students to react to the written pieces posted.  Since you will most probably be helping in the flood fighting effort in some way I do not expect you to post during the class hours.  However, I do expect thoughtful, multiple responses over the course of the 48 hours between classes.  Responding to a posting is easy in Nicenet--simply click on “Reply” to add to the thread.  If you have question during this process be certain to email me (sean.taylor@mnstate.edu).

It will be your responsibility to find an internet connection to keep up with the work--saying you had no access to a connection will not be acceptable after spring break.  Internet cafes, public libraries and other public areas offer free wireless connections where you can post to Nicenet.  It will be your responsibility to seek these out and use them in the event of closure.

SPRING BREAK REQUIREMENTS

  1. You must bring your “Struggle for Civil Rights” material home with you.  The game does not end because of break, you can continue writing and developing arguments.  More importantly, if the campus is closed or road conditions prevent you from returning to Moorhead, you may not have access to campus.
  2. Bring the Anne Hutchinson material with you.  You will need both the green game book and Edmund Morgan’s The Puritan Dilemma.  In the event of a longer closure you will be able to prepare for the final game with this material at home.  NOTE: you should read The Puritan Dilemma over break even if there is no flooding to prepare for the final unit.

This document will be posted in several areas including “Documents” in Nicenet, and on our webpage so if you loose the paper version you will still have access to it.
