Traveling with Students
The following scenarios are typical of student travel at MSUM. Review the required approvals and forms for each type of trip. In each situation, be sure to review the Travel Contingency Response Plan with your students. If you have questions about which forms are necessary, contact Tim Borchers.
Class Field Trip or Academic Group Trip
Other Student Travel (Individual or Small Group)
Student Organization Trip
Description: Travel that involves any recognized Student Organization (see list)
Trip Leader: Usually staff or faculty advisor

Approval: Vice-President for Student Affairs (via signature on the form listed above)

Class Field Trip or Other Academic Group Travel
Description: Travel that is conducted as part of a course or academic program of study, involving a large group of students and faculty and/or staff leader.
Trip Leader: Course instructor
Pre-Trip Forms

Post-Trip Forms
- Employee Expense Report (if applicable)
- Employee Credit Card approval (if applicable)

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Course
Description: Travel to a foreign country that is conducted as part of a class.
Trip Leader: Faculty member

- Participation Contract (customized for individual course)

Be sure the destination is not included on a State Department travel advisory list.

Other Student Travel (Individual or Small Group)
Description: Travel that is conducted for a variety of reasons that is outside of a class, recognized student organization, or academic program (for example, individual travel to an academic conference, groups of students traveling on a spring break service trip, etc.) but that is funded, at least in part, by some account held by the university.
Trip Leader: Student, generally
