Advising Links 2012 updated 2/10/12
If you are a new student who attended the first meeting with the department faculty (and breakout meetings with advisors) but did not complete a Major/Minor advisor change form, please stop by my office in SL 212, or the main Biosciences office in HA 103 ,to do so. It just takes a few moments to complete the form. Please do this soon so that we can update our records well in advance of the pre-registration advising period.

Chiropractic Studies
The curriculum for a Biosciences Degree
with a Health and Medical Sciences Emphasis is recommended. Students
should be sure to select electives that meet the admission requirements for the
Chiropractic Colleges of interest to them. Shadowing chiropractors is
recommended.

Dentistry
Students typically take the Dental Coop course run
with Concordia College during the spring term of their sophomore year. In this
course you shadow dentists and hear
from dentists about the profession and the preparation required
The course is listed as CHEM 469 Internship. You need to see me, Dr. Wise, to
get permission to register for this course. It is import for you to contact
me
and to talk about the spring internship course . I advise the students seeking an undergraduate degree in
Biosciences while preparing for dental school. If you are thinking of applying to a dental school, you will find valuable
information, including a suggested timeline for the application process,
provided by a recent successful candidate for several dental schools. The file
is in pdf format and should be printer friendly.
Those of you pre-dental students who are sophomores and juniors and planning your schedules should consider registering for the following course, Art 203 Intro/Sculpture/ You need to get permission from the instructor, C. Walla (CA 174). This is one of the courses that would be useful in developing and demonstrating dexterity.

Medical Technology/Clinical
Laboratory Science
You can earn a degree in Medical Technology at MSUM. This is degree
with many requirements and requires you to apply for a competitive year of
clinical education that is not guaranteed so it is very important to get early
and repeated advising when it comes to course selection and the application
process. Students are advised to have toured a clinical lab or
shadowed a CLS prior to applying for an internship.
This is a 3+1 program. You must complete all the academic coursework for the MSUM major (except the 36 clinical education credits) prior to starting the clinical internship/education. We are currently only affiliated with the Sanford Program for Medical Laboratory Science (note name change from MeritCare to Sanford) and from Clinical Science to Medical). This program accepts a maximum of 10 students into the internship from MSUM, NDSU and Concordia College. Applications are due October 1st the year prior to starting the internship. Application material are obtained from the MSUM Medical Technology Program Director, Dr. Wise. All the application materials are sent to the academic program director and then the completed files are sent on to the clinical school by the program director. After an initial review of the applications, interviews may be offered. Applicants typically find out if they are being offered an internship by mid to late November.

Mortuary Science
The MSUM pre-mortuary science curriculum was developed to prepare students who plan to
complete only two years at MSUM before applying for admission to a
School of Mortuary Science.
The University of Minnesota Program of Mortuary Science is an accredited
college program. Our suggested pre-mortuary curriculum was designed to mesh
with this program in particular.
