"Intersections of Science and Gender: Possibilities for Collaboration and Transformation"
During this address, I will discuss the intersections of Women’s and Studies and STEM fields, identify areas of common interest, and explore the advantages of interdisciplinary work for both our students and our scholarly work.I will share some of my experiences as a faculty member in both Biology and Women’s Studies – how this membership in two quite different academic realms has influenced my approach in the classroom as well as my research.More importantly, I will encourage participants to think about their own experiences and interests, answer some challenging questions about their classroom and scholarly work, and connect with others to begin and/or continue to explore ways to work together to transform the way we contemplate and act on race, class, gender and STEM.
Cynthia G. Norton is a professor of Biology and Women's Studies at St. Catherine University, St. Paul, MN. She has been involved in curriculum development efforts in her department for many years, and was part of a department-wide effort to revitalize Introductory Biology labs in the mid-1990s, allowing students the opportunity to experience the process of science by participating in team-based independent research projects during their first semester biology course. Her scholarly research includes study of the reproductive biology of hermaphroditic freshwater snails, and feminist critique of science, particularly gender roles during reproduction.
