Call for Workshop:
Feminism(s) in the Third Wave
~May 11-14~
University of Alberta
-A conference designed to build links between community and academia in order to foster feminist activism as part of an undergraduate academic experience. As students and activists connected in some way to the discipline of Women's Studies and interested in topics related to gender, feminism and women, it has become increasingly apparent to us that students are feeling a disconnect between feminist theory and feminist activism. This conference seeks to interrogate the gaps and overlaps between community and academia, and will bring together community activities, artists and students in order to reflect and strategize about how to build bridges.
-As part of the conference, we are interested in hosting workshops to provide a snapshot of the current modes of feminist activism in Canada while also building and sharing the skills of both the acedemic and community participants. Workshops should involve participants in processes that allow them to reflect on how women and feminists can bring together activism and theory in their work and lives.
-Each Workshop should do at least one of the following:
- Share skills that enable participants to do more or better activism in their communities
- Create a space to discuss the intricacies of particular issues faced by feminists in communities and/or in academia
- Explore how the relationships between feminist activism and feminist academia can be both constuctive nd troublesome
- Offer participants a chance to collaboratively strategize around issues
We welcome you to be creative with workshop forms and formats.
