Women's Studies Internship Policy
Objectives of the Internship Program
An internship is a structured and supervised professional experience, within an approved agency, for which students earn academic credit and may receive financial compensation. The objective of the internship is to provide students the opportunity to work with organizations, agencies or institutions focused on women's/gender issues and to provide mentoring opportunities between students and professionals working in the field. Students may intern in any off-campus institution or organization whose primary goal is to serve women or address women's or gender issues.
Parameters of Women's Studies Internship:
- Students may take 3 to 12 credits of internship credits in one semester
- Students must be a declared WS major
- Students must have junior standing in order to enroll in the internship
- Internship credits will be awarded on the basis of a minimum of forty (40) hours of fieldwork per semester per credit received
- Students will work with a faculty supervisor who will approve the internship, assist in planning, and evaluate the student's work in the internship
- Students will work with a mentor from the organization who will provide an evaluation of the student's work to both the student and the faculty supervisor
Departmental Procedures for approving Internships:
- Students may choose an internship from their own research or from a list of organizations provided by the WS Program
- All internships must be approved by the faculty supervisor and Women's Studies Director
- Approval of internships is based primarily on the degree to which the organization focuses on women's/gender issues
