PHIL 322 - Religious Traditions in our Global Society 2017

Regarding your READER'S REFLECTION-RESPONSE ESSAYS for PHIL 322 based on reading THE FAITH CLUB. These will be based on your Oral Presentations alphabetically scheduled by last-name beginning on Tuesday, January 31st (1/31) in WEEK IV, and staggered throughout the semester with 3 students from each class handing in their RRREs one week later (@ 100 points). These will be, first, orally presented to the class in a succinct manner (10 minutes or so), and, then, handed in to me within 1 week by the following Tuesday. So, the Oral Presentation in class would simply be based on draft-notes or outline-sketch of what will be expanded upon in the typed, 3-page RRRE.

Thus, every student will address the class by presenting the essential ideas of her/his reading-experience, thereby contributing to the seminar-feel of each class of 30 students. Students will initiate class-discussion based on the assigned pages for that class-day. This oral component of class-participation will involve choosing a topic and explaining WHAT you chose and WHY you made that choice - which means sharing with us your reflections/thoughts/insights/questions. Students will highlight, as they speak to the class, the intellectual substance of what will dvelop into their typed RRRE.

Regarding your TOPIC: The choice is yours: that is, you may speak and write about ANY subject/theme/person/ritual practice/belief/celebration/idea/... of particular interest to you derived from the assigned chapter-pages in TFC for the class-meeting pertinent to 1 or 2 or all 3 of our 3 co-authors. Be both OBJECTIVE = that is, tell us WHAT particularly interested you in those pages, giving us a good idea of what Ranya &/or Suzanne &/or Priscilla said, and be SUBJECTIVE = that is, explain WHY you chose WHAT you chose, telling us what you found intriguing, compelling, challenging, fascinating, noteworthy, perhaps personally meaningful, possibly even puzzling, ... .

And so, compose your Reader's Reflection-Response Essay with 2 dimensions in mind: OBJECTIVE: on WHAT you learned and enlightened you, and SUBJECTIVE: on your RESPONSE to what you read = on WHY it interested you in one way or another. Thus, there is really no right or wrong content to your essay. In fact, what you decide to think, speak and write about will surely be interesting for us all in class to hear about and for me to read precisely because it was meaningful for you to compose.

As for FORMAT, use standard typeface (12pt. font), double-spacing with 1-inch margins, and express yourself in grammatically correct sentences, forming a logical sequence of paragraphs, and making good use of spellchecking. So, PROOFREAD WELL before submitting your 3-page RRRE to me. If I end up having to do intensive proofreading/correcting with a red-pen, then points will be deducted from the points-potential of 100. So, be your own BEST editor-proofreader. And there is always The Write Site. AND have a separate title-page, including your name + a thematic/descriptive title indicating the topic-focus of your essay. Feel free to come to talk with me for guidance, if you wish. Your OP + RRRE should be intellectually rewarding for you to present in class and to write, and delightful for me to read - with excellent grades for sure! My expectation is that you will benefit by advancing as thinkers, readers, and writers breathing intellectual Dragon Fire!
