Homework:  There are two types of collected homework assignments - basic ones, and more involved ones.  The basic assignments will mostly be book problems and will be almost-daily.  The more involved assignments will be announced in class.  Each basic assignment will be worth 10 points, they will not be accepted late, and I will drop about 20% of them.  The exact number of dropped assignments will be announced at the end of the semester (once it is clear exactly how many assignments there will be).  The point value of the more involved assignments will be announced when the assignment is given, and I expect them to be more than 10 points.  None of the more involved assignments will be dropped.  If a more involved assignment is submitted late, it will be subjected to a 20% per weekday penalty (so submitting it on Wednesday when it was due on Monday will result in at most 60% credit).

Quizzes and In-class Activities:  These will count towards your course grade in the same category as the homework assignments, generally of the 10-point variety.  Make-ups follow the same expectations of make-up exams (see below), but are expected to be done as soon as possible.  Note that an alternate activity or quiz may be given, especially if the quiz was already graded and returned to the rest of the class.

The due time for all assignments is 4:30 pm on the day due or when I start grading, whichever is later.

Exams:  Each regular exam covers the material since the last exam.  The final exam will cover the entire semester.  Because I give five regular exams, I am willing to be a little flexible with the exam grades.  If you do better on the final exam than on your lowest regular exam, I will replace that exam with your final exam grade.  Note, however, that this would make your final exam worth 25% of your course grade (the 15% it is always worth plus the 10% for the exam that it is replacing).  Hence, if you want to take advantage of this policy, you need to study hard for the final exam since it will be worth a quarter of the course grade.

I give makeup exams rarely and only with valid, documented reasons that are given as soon as reasonably possible. In particular, this means before the exam.  This also means that I assume that if you are sick enough to miss the exam, I assume that you are sick enough to go to the student health center.  The health center can provide you with a signed and dated note saying that you were seen by a doctor (I do not need to know what you were seen for).  The documentation should be consistent with the excuse (health center note for illness, police report for a car accident the morning of the exam, funeral program or obituary for a funeral, etc.).  Makeup exams will not be graded until the documentation has been submitted.  In addition, all makeup exams are given on Study Day.  This semester, Study Day is Wednesday December 6.
