Homework:  There will be homework due almost every day.  Each assignment will be scaled to be worth 10 points (see below), they will not be accepted late, and I will drop about 20% of them.  The exact number of dropped assignments will be announced when I know exactly how many assignments there will be.  Some assignments will likely be due on test days.

The due time for all assignments is 12:00 noon on the day due or when I start grading, whichever is later.

To scale the assignments, I will take the points earned, divided by the points possible, and multiply by ten.  If the decimal portion starts with a two or larger, then I will round up.  If it starts with a zero or a one, I will round down.  Therefore, in order to get the full ten points on the assignment, you only need to get 92% on it.

Gateway Quizzes:  There will be two Gateway Quizzes.  Each quiz is worth 5% of your course grade.  The quiz grades are determined by meeting the competency level, which is 80%.  You will have unlimited attempts at each quiz, but the grade earned will be determined by how many attempts it takes you to meet the competency level.  If you pass the Gateway Quiz on the first attempt, then you will earn the entire 5% that the quiz is worth to your overall course grade.  If you pass the Gateway Quiz, on the second attempt, then you will earn 4.5% towards your course grade, etc.  The following table will be used.

Met the Competency Level on the Percent earned of overall course grade
First attempt 5.0%
Second attempt 4.5%
Third attempt 4.0%
Fourth attempt 3.5%
Fifth attempt 3.0%
Sixth or later attempt 2.5%
Did not meet the competency level 0%

The first attempt for both Gateway Quizzes will be in-class, but later attempts must be scheduled with me to be taken in my office.

Exams:  Each regular exam covers the material since the last exam.  The final exam will cover the entire course.  Because I give five regular exams, I am willing to be a little flexible with the exam grades.  If you do better on the final exam than on your lowest regular exam, I will replace that exam with your final exam grade.  Note, however, that this would make your final exam worth 25% of your course grade (the 12.5% it is always worth plus the 12.5% for the exam that it is replacing).  Hence, if you want to take advantage of this policy, you need to study hard for the final exam since it will be worth a quarter of the course grade.

I give makeup exams rarely and only with valid, documented reasons that are given as soon as reasonably possible. In particular, this means before the exam.  This also means that I assume that if you are sick enough to miss the exam, I assume that you are sick enough to go to the student health center.  The health center can provide you with a signed and dated note saying that you were seen by a doctor (I do not need to know what you were seen for).  The documentation should be consistent with the excuse (health center note for illness, police report for a car accident the morning of the exam, funeral program or obituary for a funeral, etc.).  Makeup exams will not be graded until the documentation has been submitted.  In addition, all makeup exams will be given only during the week of March 7.
